Panjab University Shut Today: Exams Postponed, Fresh Dates Soon

Panjab University remained completely shut today following intensified student protests demanding the announcement of Senate election schedules. All academic, administrative, and examination activities across the campus have been suspended for the day. The university authorities also confirmed that several exams scheduled for November Twenty Six, Two Thousand Twenty Five have been postponed. The shutdown was enforced after students called for a complete campus closure under the banner of the Panjab University Bachao Morcha. The agitation, which has been ongoing for over a year, escalated this month after policy-level decisions related to university governance.

Why Panjab University Students Are Protesting?

The ongoing protests are rooted in the long-pending demand for the conduct of PU Senate elections, a key governing body responsible for major academic policies and decision-making. Students allege that repeated delays have weakened the representation of student voices in university administration. Earlier in October, the Ministry of Education issued a notification proposing a restructuring of PU’s Senate and Syndicate. Although this notification was withdrawn on November Seven, students have continued the agitation, stating that withdrawal alone does not address their core demand. On November Ten, protests turned intense when demonstrators forced open campus gates and clashed with security personnel. Since then, students have repeatedly warned of campus blockades until an official election timeline is made public.

Panjab University Exams Postponed: Centres and Official Statement

Due to the shutdown, the university administration postponed multiple examinations that were scheduled across the main campus. This disruption impacts both undergraduate and postgraduate students across various departments. Before reviewing the affected centres, it is important to note that earlier communication from the university had declared November Twenty Six a working day, with staff instructed to be present throughout the day. However, the escalation in protests forced the authorities to reverse this decision in the interest of safety.

Administrative Stand and Political Support

PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig appealed for calm and emphasized that while protest is a democratic right, students appearing for examinations also deserve an obstruction-free environment. The administration has confirmed that the Senate election schedule has been forwarded for approval to the Chancellor, who is also the Vice-President of India. The agitation has received support from several political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal, along with farmer organisations such as the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha. Despite these developments, protesting students have stated that the shutdown will continue until an official election notification is issued.
