- Higher bed-to-seat ratio in many departments for private colleges
- Reduction in seats for some departments with fixed bed limits
- Cap of 4 seats per 40 beds in general surgery, orthopaedics, and related branches (earlier 5 seats)
In some departments like general medicine and paediatrics, private colleges now need more beds for the same number of seats, while government colleges retain relatively relaxed norms. However, in select specialities such as psychiatry, dermatology, and radiation oncology, government colleges can now offer more seats per bed strength compared to earlier norms.
NMC PG Courses 2026: Faculty Norms Revised for Private Colleges
The commission has also modified faculty requirements, particularly for private medical institutions. The aim is to ease staffing constraints while maintaining academic standards. Important changes include:
- Revised faculty-student ratio of 1:2 for senior faculty in private colleges
- Removal of earlier relaxation allowing higher student load per professor
- Two students can now be assigned per associate professor instead of one
These updates align private college norms more closely with government institutions.

Along with bed and faculty norms, the commission has introduced several operational guidelines for medical colleges. Major updates include:
- Maximum 4 units per department with a limit of 40 beds per unit
- Mandatory regular updates on college websites
- Strict prohibition on faculty engaging in private practice during working hours, including lunch breaks
