NIT Rourkela Introduces New BTech Courses in Semiconductor and Computing

National Institute of Technology Rourkela has introduced two new undergraduate engineering programmes for the 2026-27 academic session. The institute announced the launch of BTech courses in Semiconductor Technology and Computational Engineering (Physics and Mathematics Computing).

The new programmes aim to align engineering education with emerging industry demands in semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and data-driven technologies. Admissions to these courses will be conducted through Joint Entrance Examination Main counselling. According to the institute, the courses have been designed with a strong interdisciplinary curriculum combining core engineering principles with advanced computational and applied science subjects.

New BTech Courses Introduced by NIT Rourkela

The institute has launched the following programmes:

The courses will begin from the academic year 2026-27. The Computational Engineering programme will focus on areas such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Scientific Computing
  • Data Analytics
  • Mathematical Modelling
  • Quantum Computing fundamentals

Meanwhile, the Semiconductor Technology programme will cover:

  • Chip design
  • VLSI systems
  • Semiconductor fabrication
  • Embedded systems
  • Nanoelectronics

Admission Through JEE Main 2026

Admissions to the new BTech programmes will be offered through the JoSAA counselling process based on JEE Main scores.

Students aspiring to secure admission at National Institute of Technology Rourkela must qualify in JEE Main 2026 and participate in centralised counselling. The institute is expected to release detailed seat matrix and eligibility criteria during the admission process.

Why NIT Rourkela Introduced These Courses?

The institute stated that the decision was taken to meet growing demand in advanced technology sectors.India’s semiconductor ecosystem has witnessed rapid growth due to increasing investments in:

  • Chip manufacturing
  • Electronics production
  • AI-driven technologies
  • High-performance computing

The Government of India has also been promoting semiconductor manufacturing initiatives under national technology missions. Experts believe that specialised engineering programmes focused on semiconductors and computational sciences could improve employability opportunities for engineering graduates in the coming years.

Industry Demand for Semiconductor Engineers

The semiconductor industry is currently among the fastest-growing technology sectors globally.

According to industry estimates, India may require thousands of skilled semiconductor professionals over the next decade due to upcoming chip fabrication projects and electronics manufacturing expansion. The new Semiconductor Technology course at NIT Rourkela is expected to help students build expertise in both hardware and software-oriented semiconductor applications.

Computational Engineering Emerging as High-Demand Field

Computational Engineering has become increasingly important across industries including:

  • Finance
  • Aerospace
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Climate Science
  • Robotics
  • Healthcare analytics

The integration of physics, mathematics, and computing is expected to prepare students for research as well as industry-oriented technology roles.

NIT Rourkela Placements and Academic Expansion

National Institute of Technology Rourkela has consistently remained among the top-performing NITs in India in terms of placements and research output.

The institute has been expanding its academic offerings over recent years by introducing interdisciplinary and future-focused programmes. Industry collaborations and research initiatives in AI, semiconductor systems, and advanced computing have also increased at the institute.
