Maharashtra Suspends 81 Teachers for ChatGPT-Aided Board Exam Cheating

The Maharashtra education authorities have suspended 81 teachers in Beed district for allegedly helping students cheat during Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations using the AI tool ChatGPT. The action was taken after officials detected irregularities during the ongoing board exam sessions. According to officials, the teachers were found to be assisting students by using artificial intelligence tools to generate answers during the exams. The incident has raised serious concerns about the misuse of technology in examination halls.

Board Exam Cheating Detected at Examination Centres

The investigation revealed that teachers at several exam centres were allegedly involved in facilitating cheating. Authorities said that AI tools such as ChatGPT were used to quickly generate answers that were then shared with students during the examination. The highest number of suspensions reportedly occurred at the Chousala examination centre in Beed district, where officials detected large-scale irregularities during the exam process. Education authorities initiated immediate disciplinary action after the malpractice was confirmed.

Action Taken by Maharashtra Education Authorities

After preliminary inquiries, the authorities suspended the teachers involved in the incident. Officials said the action was necessary to maintain the integrity and credibility of the board examination system. Further disciplinary proceedings may be initiated against the teachers depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also examining whether other individuals were involved in facilitating the malpractice.

Concerns Over Misuse of Artificial Intelligence in Exams

The incident has sparked a broader debate about the misuse of artificial intelligence tools in educational settings. While AI platforms such as ChatGPT are widely used for learning and research, authorities emphasised that using them to assist cheating during examinations is a serious violation of exam rules. Education officials said stricter monitoring mechanisms may be introduced at examination centres to prevent the misuse of technology in future board exams.

Efforts to Strengthen Examination Integrity

The Maharashtra board conducts Class 10 (SSC) and Class 12 (HSC) examinations annually for lakhs of students across the state. Ensuring fairness and transparency during these exams remains a major priority for the education department. Officials indicated that enhanced surveillance measures and stricter enforcement of examination guidelines may be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
