Proposal to Relax SSLC Passing Criteria
Alongside the timetable release, the Karnataka government has proposed changes in SSLC passing norms.
Current System:
- Minimum 35% marks in each subject are mandatory.
- No overall average is considered for passing.
Proposed System (from AY 2026 onwards):
- Subject-wise pass mark: 30%.
- Overall requirement: 33% average combining internal and external assessments.
- Minimum marks required: 206 out of 625 total marks.
This move is aimed at addressing the sharp decline in SSLC pass percentages.
SSLC Pass Percentage Trends
The overall pass rate has witnessed fluctuations over the past few years:
- 2022–23: 83%
- 2023–24 (Exam 1): 54% (due to the introduction of the web-casting system)
- Later revised to 74% with grace marks
The proposed change in evaluation is expected to provide flexibility for students struggling in one or two subjects, allowing them to balance scores across the board.
