After enduring a notable downturn for nearly three years, Kota, Rajasthan, is experiencing a resurgence in student admissions to coaching institutes. Preliminary data for the 2026-27 academic session indicates a remarkable increase of 20 to 30 percent in enrolments, particularly among those preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
This recovery comes on the heels of a sharp contraction that occurred between 2023 and 2025, during which student numbers plummeted by 30 to 40 percent. The total intake fell dramatically from approximately 2.5 lakh aspirants, which previously generated an estimated annual revenue of Rs 6,500 to 7,000 crore, to a mere 85,000 to 1 lakh students. Consequently, the revenue during this period dwindled to around Rs 3,500 crore.
Current Admission Trends
The ongoing admission cycle, which commenced with new batches on March 25 and will continue until April 2, has already resulted in a noticeable uptick in both student and parent activity in the city. This surge suggests that the prolonged slowdown may finally be easing, although the sustainability of this recovery remains a critical question.
Kota's Reputation in Competitive Exam Preparation
Kota has long been recognized as a premier destination for students aiming to excel in competitive examinations. Over the past four decades, it has attracted aspirants from across India, particularly those seeking admission to prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Recent results further bolster this reputation; in the January session of JEE Main, eight out of twelve candidates who achieved the coveted 100th percentile were from institutes based in Kota. Additionally, students from this city have consistently secured the All India Rank 1 in IIT-JEE for the past two years.
Local Economic Recovery and Infrastructure
The local community is optimistic about the influx of students, linking it to a broader economic recovery. Firoj Khan, president of the Kota Station Area Auto Union, expressed hope for a return to the prosperous times of yesteryears. Om Birla, the Lok Sabha Speaker and Member of Parliament from Kota-Bundi, emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive environment for students preparing for engineering and medical entrance examinations. He also called on residents to contribute positively to student welfare.
Kota's infrastructure is well-equipped to handle the influx, boasting nearly 4,000 hostels and around 45,000 paying guest facilities. Approximately 35 coaching institutes operate within the city, offering specialized training for national-level entrance examinations. Naveen Mittal, president of the Kota Hostel Association, noted that the current student inflow exceeds expectations, reaffirming the trust that students and parents place in Kota's educational ecosystem. He urged hostel operators to maintain reasonable rent prices despite the rising demand.

Parents and students from various regions of the country have expressed their confidence in Kota. Ajay Kumar from Imphal mentioned he chose the city based on positive feedback from students in the Northeast. Om Kumar from Begusarai described Kota as a highly competitive environment conducive to focused study, while Bhavesh from Jalgaon referred to it as a hub for engineering and medical preparation. Dr. Anurag Singh from Ambedkar Nagar highlighted that perceptions of the city often differ from reality, citing its robust academic environment and facilities.
In addition to rising admissions, coaching institutes are ramping up orientation and counselling sessions. These programs focus on essential skills such as behavior management, stress reduction, and effective study planning, with active participation from both students and their parents.
Implications for Local Businesses and Future Outlook
The increase in student enrolments is anticipated to benefit local businesses that cater to student needs. However, the recent past serves as a cautionary tale. A system that experienced a decline of up to 40 percent in a short time cannot solely depend on the return of numbers for stability.
At present, Kota's recovery is evident in both admissions and the bustling activity of its streets. The crucial question remains whether this trend will translate into a sustained revival, contingent on addressing the underlying factors that contributed to the earlier downturn.
