Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty has announced that the syllabus in Class 10 textbooks will be reduced by 25%from the next academic year. The decision has been taken in response to frequent student complaints about the heavy academic workload.
The minister stated that the curriculum committee has already approved the reduction, and the change will be implemented in the upcoming school year.
Kerala SSLC Curriculum Change Approved by Curriculum Committee
Sivankutty clarified that while the syllabus load will be reduced, the content of the textbooks will not be altered. The step is intended to make learning more manageable for students without compromising the quality of education. He said the state government decided to take necessary action after considering the academic pressure faced by students.
The minister confirmed:
- 25% syllabus reduction will be introduced
- The change will apply from the next academic year
- The curriculum committee has approved the move
- Textbook content will remain the same
Announcement Made During Tribute Event at Thevalakkara School
The Education Minister made the announcement while addressing students at a ceremony held in Thevalakkara. The event included the handover of keys to a newly constructed house for the family of Mithun, a Class 10 student who died after being electrocuted near the premises of Thevalakkara Boys High School last year. The key-handover ceremony was jointly carried out by Sivankutty and Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal.
Mithun Bhavanam Constructed as a Tribute
Earlier, Sivankutty shared in a Facebook post that Mithun had dreamed of building a good house for his family and had even drawn the design on the walls of their small home. A new house named “Mithun Bhavanam” has now been completed, fulfilling the student’s wish, though the minister noted that the family continues to feel the deep loss of the child. The Kerala State Bharat Scouts and Guides took the initiative to construct the house without collecting money from students.
The organisation built a:
- 1,000-square-foot house
- Completed within six months
- Constructed at a cost of INR 20 lakh
Sivankutty described the effort as a humane and model intervention that reflects collective responsibility towards children and their dreams.
Academic Burden Relief for Kerala Class 10 Students
The syllabus reduction announcement is expected to bring relief to Kerala Class 10 students by lowering academic stress and improving learning balance. More details regarding implementation and revised syllabus structure may be released by the education department ahead of the next academic year.
