Kerala Class 10 Syllabus 25% Reduction Won’t Remove Core Textbook Content

Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty has clarified that the planned 25 per cent reduction in the Class 10 curriculum will not eliminate core textbook portions, amidst concerns about academic standards.

Kerala SSLC Syllabus 25% Reduction and Policy Rationale

The Education Minister announced that the state plans to reduce the overall content load in the Class 10 syllabus by one-fourth from the next academic year in response to frequent complaints from students about heavy workloads. This change is intended to streamline learning and make classroom content more age-appropriate without compromising essential chapters. Experts in the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and other committees will review all proposed changes. Sivankutty emphasized that any modifications will be grounded in scientific analysis and expert reports, and will not affect the fundamental structure of textbooks

Core Content Preservation in Textbooks

Addressing concerns from parents, teachers, and academic stakeholders, the minister clarified that the reduction targets repetitive or less relevant topics, not the core syllabus that forms the basis of classroom instruction and evaluation. He reiterated that “reducing content load does not mean removing core or essential portions of the syllabus”. The objective is to prevent unnecessary repetition across subjects and ensure that students engage with content suited to their learning level, particularly as they prepare for the SSLC board exams.

Implementation and Future Curriculum Review

The decision to trim the syllabus follows consultations with curriculum experts and is part of broader educational reforms aimed at reducing student stress and improving learning outcomes. The approach for reviewing the Class 10 syllabus will be the same for other SSLC-level subjects to maintain consistency across the board. Sivankutty also highlighted that the government’s policy intent is to align syllabus changes with academic standards and student wellbeing, rather than making arbitrary cuts that could impact learning quality.
