The Karnataka government has introduced a 15 percent NRI quota in its government medical colleges for the academic year 2025–26, with a fixed annual fee of ₹ 25 lakh per seat. The policy covers newly added 400 MBBS seats, each allocated to eight government medical colleges of the state.
Expansion of Medical Seats and NRI Quota Implementation
The National Medical Commission (NMC) sanctioned 450 additional MBBS seats for Karnataka, of which 400 seats have been allocated equally—50 to each of eight government medical colleges in cities such as Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Raichur, and Vijayanagar. These seats are included in the NEET UG 2025 Round 2 counselling.
Seat Allocation and NRI Quota Structure
This increase brings the total MBBS seats in Karnataka to 9,663, up from 9,263 offered in the first round of allotments.
Expected Impact of the NRI Quota Policy
Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash R Patil stated that the inclusion of NRI seats aims to make government medical colleges more financially self-reliant, reducing dependence on state subsidies. Candidates from the general (Indian) category will still participate in the counselling process and can register preferences for "Q" category seats if NRI seats remain unfilled.
