JEE Main 2026 final rank will be determined using the best percentile score obtained across multiple sessions. NTA uses a normalization process to ensure fairness across different shifts and exam difficulty levels.
JEE Main 2026 Result: Which Session Score Will Determine Final Rank. The National Testing Agency (NTA) follows a percentile-based system to prepare the final merit list for candidates appearing in multiple sessions. Candidates often appear in both sessions to improve their scores, and the evaluation method ensures fair comparison across attempts.
JEE Main 2026 Final Rank Based on Best Percentile Score
The final All India Rank (AIR) is calculated using the best percentile score obtained by a candidate across all sessions.
- If a candidate appears in both Session 1 and Session 2,
- The higher percentile score will be considered
- The lower score is ignored for ranking purposes
This allows candidates to improve their performance without penalty.
How NTA Calculates JEE Main 2026 Rank?
The ranking process involves multiple steps to ensure fairness across different exam shifts. The system does not rely directly on raw marks.
- Raw marks are first calculated based on correct answers
- Scores are then normalized across sessions
- Normalized scores are converted into percentiles
- Final rank is prepared based on percentile ranking
Percentile reflects a candidate’s performance relative to others in the same session.
Why Percentile is Used Instead of Raw Marks?
Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts with varying difficulty levels, using raw marks alone may not be fair.
- Different sessions may have different difficulty levels
- Percentile ensures equal comparison across sessions
- Even with similar marks, candidates may get different percentiles
This normalization ensures transparency and fairness in result preparation.
JEE Main 2026 Session Strategy for Candidates
Appearing in both sessions can be beneficial for improving rank. Candidates can use the second attempt strategically.
- Session 2 allows candidates to improve percentile score
- Best score is automatically considered
- Helps reduce pressure of a single attempt
Candidates should aim to maximise their percentile rather than focusing only on raw marks.
When Will JEE Main 2026 Rank Be Released?
The final rank list is released after the completion of all sessions. It includes percentile scores and All India Rank. The JEE Main 2026 Session 2 result is expected around 20 April 2026, after which the final rank will be declared. Candidates are advised to check their scorecards carefully and use the best percentile to estimate their admission chances in NITs, IIITs, and other participating institutes.
