The JEE Main 2026 January session has concluded for exams held from 21 to 24 January. Overall difficulty remained moderate to tough, with variations across shifts and subjects. Experts have released shift-wise marks vs percentile estimates to help candidates assess performance.
The JEE Main 2026 January session examinations were conducted on 21, 22, 23 and 24 January 2026 across multiple shifts. Candidates scheduled for the remaining examination dates and the April session can evaluate recent paper trends to refine their preparation strategy. Across the conducted shifts, the examination was largely rated moderate to tough, with lengthy papers emerging as a consistent challenge for aspirants.
JEE Main 2026 January Session Exam Overview
The National Testing Agency conducted the January session on 21, 22, 23, 24, 28 and 29 January 2026. Exams held between 21 and 24 January 2026 witnessed participation from over 10 lakh candidates. Most shifts demanded strong time management skills due to calculation-heavy and concept-intensive questions. Subject-wise difficulty varied across days, but Mathematics remained lengthy in almost all shifts, while Physics often tested advanced conceptual clarity.
JEE Main 2026 Subject-Wise Difficulty Trends
Based on student feedback and expert evaluation, clear subject-wise patterns emerged during the first four days of the exam. Physics sections frequently included numerically intensive and concept-driven questions, with some shifts approaching advanced-level difficulty. Chemistry papers combined theoretical understanding with statement-based questions, increasing complexity. Mathematics, though largely moderate in concept, proved time-consuming due to lengthy problem-solving requirements.
Toughest and Easiest Shifts of JEE Main 2026 So Far
An assessment of shift-wise performance highlights noticeable differences in difficulty levels.January 23, Shift 2 has been identified as the toughest shift due to an exceptionally demanding Mathematics section and balanced difficulty across all subjects. In contrast, January 24, Shift 1 is considered the most manageable, although Mathematics remained lengthy. Overall trends suggest that no shift was entirely easy, reinforcing the importance of accuracy and selective question attempts.
JEE Main 2026 January Session Expected Marks vs Percentile
Considering the moderate to tough nature of the papers, experts anticipate a slight dip in cutoff scores. The estimated marks vs percentile ranges provide candidates with a reference to evaluate expected outcomes. For most shifts, a 99 percentile is projected within the 150 to 180 marks range, depending on shift difficulty. The 95 percentile is expected between 100 and 130 marks, while a 90 percentile may fall within 80 to 105 marks across different shifts. These projections may vary marginally once official normalization is applied.
Key Preparation Insights for Upcoming JEE Main Shifts
Candidates appearing in the remaining January session dates or the April attempt should focus on efficient time allocation. Avoiding prolonged engagement with lengthy questions early in the paper can significantly improve overall accuracy. A balanced approach, prioritising strong subject areas while managing calculation-heavy sections carefully, remains essential for maximising scores in JEE Main 2026.
