Students and experts have described the JEE Main 2026 January session exam as one of the toughest in recent years. Overall difficulty stemmed mainly from lengthy Mathematics and challenging Physics questions, with Chemistry also posing higher-than-expected complexity.
The JEE Main 2026 January session — conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) from 21 to 24 January — has been broadly rated as one of the more difficult editions in recent years by both students and subject-matter experts. According to initial feedback, many shifts featured lengthy, multifaceted questions that tested deep conceptual understanding and application rather than rote learning.
JEE Main 2026: Overall Paper Difficulty: Harder Than Usual
Across multiple days and shifts, candidates reported that the January session papers were notably tougher compared to recent JEE Main cycles. While some shifts were moderately difficult, others featured questions that were time-consuming and conceptually demanding. In particular:
- Physics presented several multi-step numerical and conceptual questions that took extra time to solve.
- Mathematics was frequently labelled lengthy and tough, involving higher-order calculations and layered problem-solving.
- Chemistry also leaned toward a challenging layout, with complex physical problems and analytical questions that tested deeper comprehension.
Some students specifically noted that even well-prepared aspirants found it difficult to finish all questions comfortably within the three-hour time window. This was particularly evident in shifts where the Mathematics section limited high scores, and Physics exhausted time due to thought-intensive problems.
JEE Main 2026: Shift-Wise Feedback Highlights
While overall difficulty varied from shift to shift, several patterns emerged:
- Later shifts in the January session, especially around 22 January Shift 2 and 24 January, were frequently described as the toughest among all conducted papers, with students reporting reduced attempt rates due to tough cross-topic questions.
- In some shifts, combinations of topics from integral calculus, conic sections and vectors in Mathematics, alongside conceptually deep Physics items, significantly increased time pressure.
However, there was variation: a few papers were rated moderate by students, particularly when questions aligned closely with standard syllabus coverage without many multi-layered traps.
JEE Main 2026: Expert Insights and Expected Impact
Experts believe that the elevated difficulty level reflects an emphasis on problem-solving depth and analysis rather than simple recall. This shift in trend may influence the normalisation process, potentially affecting average scores and percentile trends. One key anticipated impact is that the cut-off marks for JEE Advanced eligibility may be somewhat lower than in previous cycles if the overall performance curve drops due to harder questions. However, NTA will confirm this only after the official answer keys and result processing.
What Candidates Are Saying?
Many students expressed that individual subject experience varied widely:
- Mathematics alone limited many test-takers’ ability to attempt all questions.
- Physics demanded unusual analytical depth in certain shifts.
- Chemistry questions, while balanced, included unexpected multi-step items requiring meticulous application of theory.
Overall, aspirants awaiting results are advised to use memory-based papers and answer keys to evaluate their estimated performance and prepare for potential implications in percentile interpretation and counselling strategies.
