The JEE Main 2026 January 23 Shift 1 exam concluded successfully across centres. Student reactions suggest a moderate and lengthy paper, with Mathematics rated as the toughest section.
JEE Main 2026 Session 1 continued on 23 January 2026 with the successful conclusion of the morning Shift 1 examination. The Paper 1 exam for BE and BTech candidates was held from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM across various centres. After the exam, candidates shared their initial feedback, which forms the basis of the early paper analysis. According to students, the overall difficulty level of the paper was moderate but time-consuming.

As per the day 3 shift-wise analysis, the January 23 Shift 1 paper was rated moderate in overall difficulty. Candidates described the paper as balanced and similar in pattern to previous shifts, though it required good speed and accuracy. The exam was lengthy, and many candidates found it challenging to attempt all questions within the allotted time.

The subject-wise difficulty assessment is based on initial student reactions and expert review.Each section tested conceptual understanding along with problem-solving skills.
Physics was reported to be moderate. Most questions were formula-based with a strong focus on core concepts. Topics such as mechanics, electrostatics, ray optics, thermodynamics, and modern physics had noticeable weightage.
Chemistry was described as moderate but lengthy. Students found the section concept-heavy and time-consuming, with questions from chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, coordination compounds, and biomolecules.
Mathematics emerged as the toughest section of the paper. Candidates reported lengthy calculations and multi-step problems, making time management difficult.

Based on initial reactions, many students felt that the January 23 Shift 1 exam was tougher compared to expectations. While Physics remained manageable, both Chemistry and Mathematics required significant time investment.
