JEE Main 2026 candidates in Pune faced significant challenges reaching their exam centre near Wanowrie because of major road closures and traffic diversions for the Pune Grand Tour 2026 cycling event. Parents criticised the lack of coordinated traffic management. Authorities announced wide-ranging route closures affecting traffic throughout the city.
On 21 January 2026, many JEE Main 2026 candidates appearing for the national engineering entrance exam in Pune encountered severe travel disruptions due to extensive road closures and traffic diversions associated with the ongoing Pune Grand Tour 2026 international cycling event. The situation drew frustration from students and parents who struggled to reach the exam centre near Wanowrie in Pune Cantonment.
Exam Day Travel Disruptions Due to Pune Grand Tour Road Closures
The Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026 cycling competition runs from 19 to 24 January 2026, with Stage-2 of the race on 21 January requiring major arterial roads to be closed or diverted to traffic, including key stretches around MG Road, Golibar Maidan, Yeolewadi, Khadi Machine Chowk, Bopdev Ghat, Kirkatwadi and Nanded City between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. These restrictions left many motorists and students with longer alternative routes and significant delays.
Candidates headed for the centre MR2205 – iON Digital Zone iDZ Ramtekdi 2, Ramtekdi Industrial Estate No. 2, near an HP petrol pump in Hadapsar, found that usual routes were blocked, forcing them to navigate congested diversion roads via Jahangir Chowk and other circuitous paths. In some cases, what should have been a short journey turned into a multi-hour ordeal, causing stress on a crucial exam day.
Parents and Students Raise Concerns About Coordination
Parents present near the Wanowrie-area exam venue reported that traffic management arrangements appeared insufficient, with police forces largely focused on the cycling event rather than facilitating exam-related travel. Some described a police vehicle parked at critical junctions worsening congestion, and many candidates took one to two-and-a-half hours to reach their centre. The absence of basic amenities near waiting areas also compounded frustration among families. Residents from Swargate, Salisbury Park, and surrounding areas also faced similar diversion-related issues and were forced to use alternate loops like Camp-area routes to reach their destinations, adding to the general travel disruption in Pune during the race hours.
Broader Traffic Impact in Pune on Exam Day
In anticipation of the international cycling event, the Pune City Traffic Police had issued advisories declaring major traffic curbs and diversions on January 21 and 23, with closures planned from early morning till evening, affecting vehicular movement and requiring citizens to use designated alternative paths. Heavy vehicle restrictions and adjusted one-way traffic measures were also in place citywide under the official traffic plan released before the race. Meanwhile, authorities also ordered closure of schools and colleges in Kondhwa, Wanowrie, Camp, and Sinhagad Road areas for the entirety of 21 January to reduce risk and manage student safety during the period of road closures.
What Aspirants Are Advising Future Candidates?
Many candidates and parents stressed the importance of planning travel well in advance during major city events, especially on exam days. They suggested that notification of traffic changes should be disseminated earlier to avoid last-minute travel stress. Continued cooperation between event organisers, traffic police and examination authorities was called for to ensure smoother conduct of both academic and sporting events in urban settings.
