IPS Ankita Sharma UPSC Success Story: From MBA Dropout to Lady Singham

An inspiring civil services journey has emerged from Chhattisgarh with IPS Ankita Sharma, who left her MBA programme to pursue the UPSC Civil Services Examination and later earned the nickname ‘Lady Singham’ for her brave service in Naxal-affected areas. Her story exemplifies resilience, determination, and public service commitment in one of India’s toughest competitive examinations. Born and raised in a small town in Durg district, Sharma excelled academically at a government school, scoring impressive marks in her secondary and higher secondary studies. She enrolled in an MBA programme after graduation but soon realised her true ambition lay in serving the nation through the civil services.

A Journey Marked by Setbacks and Success

Sharma’s path to becoming an IPS officer was not straightforward. She attempted the UPSC Civil Services Examination multiple times. In her first attempt, she narrowly missed qualifying for the Mains exam by just 15 marks, and in her second attempt, she did not clear the Preliminary exam. Instead of giving up, she reviewed her approach, strengthened her preparation, and persevered with renewed focus. Her hard work paid off in 2018, when she secured an All India Rank of 203 in the UPSC examination. This achievement made her the first woman IPS officer from Chhattisgarh, a historic milestone for the state and a source of pride for her community.

Fearless Service in Naxal-Affected Areas

After joining the Indian Police Service, Sharma took on challenging assignments in Naxal-affected regions of Chhattisgarh. Her leadership in operations against extremist elements and her fearless approach earned her widespread recognition among peers and locals alike. Her actions in hostile terrain contributed to her being referred to as ‘Lady Singham’, reflecting both her bravery and operational effectiveness. As an IPS officer, she continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing security and stability in troubled districts. Her work reflects both tactical courage and a deep commitment to service, inspiring many aspiring civil servants across India.

Lessons in Perseverance for Aspirants

Ankita Sharma’s journey demonstrates that academic setbacks and initial failures do not define a candidate’s destiny. Her ability to adapt, maintain focus, and persevere through multiple attempts is a testament to her resolve. Her transition from a management student to a disciplined IPS officer offers insight into the dedication required for success in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
