India to Introduce AI Education from Class 3 in Schools from 2026-27

The Ministry of Education has announced that starting the 2026-27 academic year, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) will be integrated into the school curriculum from Class 3 onwards. This landmark reform aims to equip young learners with essential digital literacy and problem-solving skills in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

Why AI Curriculum for Class 3 onwards is a Strategic Move?

Officials say that in a rapidly digitising economy the ability to understand and apply AI and CT is becoming as foundational as reading and arithmetic. A statement from the School Education Secretary highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to treat AI as a “universal basic skill” rather than a specialised elective. Additionally, the curriculum will be designed to be broad-based, student-centric and inclusive.

What the New AI and CT Curriculum Will Involve?

The rollout plans include several key components to ensure effective implementation and reach:

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has set up an expert committee to develop the grade-wise AI & CT framework.
  • Teacher training modules are being prepared under the NISHTHA programme for capacity building.
  • Digital and print learning materials, including handbooks for students and teachers, are targeted for completion by December 2025.
  • Pilot projects are underway where teachers use AI tools for lesson planning and classroom activities.
  • The curriculum aims to embed ethical considerations, creativity, and problem-solving alongside technology skills.

Schools and teacher training institutions across states and union territories will coordinate to adopt this new curriculum. Stakeholder consultations have already been held with bodies such as the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and state education departments to map out the roadmap.

What Students, Parents and Educators Should Know?

  • Parents and students should prepare for the fact that AI and CT concepts will now start from Class 3, rather than waiting until higher grades.
  • Current school teachers will undergo training and may adopt new pedagogies involving hands-on activities and AI-based learning tools.
  • Schools will receive support for infrastructure, digital content and monitoring mechanisms to ensure inclusive access.
  • As the curriculum becomes part of regular schooling, students will benefit from a stronger foundation in digital and computational thinking, preparing them for future higher education and careers.
