Illinois Institute of Technology Opens Mumbai Campus as Global Education Shifts

The Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) is set to open its degree-granting campus in Mumbai in fall 2026, marking a historic foray into India by a major US higher-education institution. The announcement comes as global student mobility trends undergo a transformation, with rising costs, tighter visa norms and employer demand reshaping how and where students pursue international education. The new Illinois Tech Mumbai campus will operate out of Vikhroli in Mumbai, positioning itself in one of India’s major commercial hubs. The campus will offer undergraduate and graduate degrees following the American academic structure — Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS), MBA and Bachelor of Arts (BA) — rather than India’s traditional BTech/ME degree nomenclature.

Illinois Tech’s Mumbai project represents a major milestone: it is the first U.S. university formally approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a full-fledged, degree-granting campus in India.
