IIT Ropar has signed an MoA with Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur, to award MTech degrees in Defence Technology to Army officers undergoing the Long Air Defence Course. The partnership will also support research mentorship, laboratory access, seminars and defence technology development.
The IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology Programme has been launched under a new academic partnership between the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar and the Army Air Defence College (AADC), Gopalpur. Under the agreement, Indian Army officers undergoing the Long Air Defence Course will receive an MTech degree in Defence Technology from IIT Ropar.
The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to provide formal academic accreditation to the technical training undertaken by Army officers. The partnership also expands opportunities for research, faculty mentorship, laboratory access and technology development in defence-related areas.
IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology Programme
Under the IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology Programme, officers enrolled in the Long Air Defence Course at Army Air Defence College will receive formal academic recognition through an MTech degree. The programme combines specialised military training with postgraduate-level technical education and research.
The agreement was signed by Prof Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar, and Lt Gen Amit Rao, Commandant, Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur. The initiative is aimed at strengthening technical education and research capabilities among officers working in the defence sector.
The latest MoA builds on an earlier Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2022 between Army Training Command, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), and IIT Ropar for academic and research cooperation.
IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology Eligibility
The IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology eligibility under this agreement is specifically linked to officers undergoing the Long Air Defence Course at Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur. This is not a general MTech admission route open to all engineering graduates.
The programme has been designed to formally recognise the technical and professional training received by participating Army officers. The collaboration therefore connects defence training with advanced academic qualifications in technology and research.
IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology Research and Mentorship
As part of the IIT Ropar MTech Defence Technology Programme, faculty members from IIT Ropar will be nominated as mentors for participating officers. They will guide officers in their dissertations and research projects during the programme.
The officers will also be able to use IIT Ropar's laboratories and other academic infrastructure, subject to prior approval. IIT Ropar faculty members will additionally conduct seminars and lectures in both online and offline formats.
The two institutions have also agreed to collaborate on developing technological knowledge in areas of mutual interest. This is expected to strengthen research and innovation in defence technology while creating closer academic links between IIT Ropar and the Indian Army.
IIT Ropar Army Air Defence College MoA
The IIT Ropar Army Air Defence College MoA strengthens a partnership that has been developing since 2022. IIT Ropar's Defence Research and Innovation Foundation has played an important role in expanding the institute's academic and research engagement with the Indian Army.
The new agreement brings postgraduate education into this collaboration, allowing Army officers to gain an MTech qualification while undertaking specialised air defence training. The initiative also creates opportunities for joint research and the development of defence-focused technological expertise.
