The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched the National Internship, Placement Training, and Assessment (NIPTA) initiative to standardise internship and job readiness for engineering and diploma students across India. The programme aims to provide accessible training and a national employability benchmark to enhance student career prospects.
NIPTA Initiative Overview
The NIPTA programme, introduced through IIT Madras Shaastra Magazine, will offer a curated training programme for students, followed by a standardised assessment to measure skills and employability. IIT Madras will also share assessment results with recruiters and organise a National Job and Internship Mela in early 2026, connecting students directly with potential employers.
Launch and Vision
The initiative was launched by Dharmendra Pradhan, Education Minister, Government of India, at the IIT Madras campus. Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “With several thousands of students aspiring to take internships and subsequently placements in different organisations, the NIPTA initiative is very timely. It aligns with the Institute’s motto of ‘IITM For All’, to democratise opportunities for students across India.”
Prof. Srikanth Vedantam, Faculty, Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, and Editorial Board Chair of Shaastra Magazine, added that NIPTA makes employability measurable and transparent, empowering students to acquire standardised credentials for better internship and employment opportunities.
NIPTA Training and Assessment Structure
The programme will provide free training resources, including video lectures and sample questions. Students need to pay a nominal fee to take the assessment. The evaluation is a three-hour, proctored exam conducted in designated centres across India in in-person mode.
NIPTA is targeted at:
- Third- and final-year engineering students
- Recent engineering graduates
- Final-year diploma students
- Diploma holders
Assessment Components and Certification
The NIPTA assessment will measure:
- Technical Knowledge (Branch-Specific)
- Mathematical Aptitude
- Logical Reasoning
- Communication Skills
Each participant will receive a performance-based certificate issued by IIT Madras, providing a credible and transparent indicator of skills. The certification allows students to benchmark themselves against peers and helps recruiters evaluate candidates with an objective metric.
Key Benefits of NIPTA
The NIPTA initiative aims to:
- Equip students with essential skills for internships and jobs
- Provide a national standard for employability assessment
- Facilitate direct connections with recruiters through the National Job and Internship Mela
Offer transparent performance evaluation for both students and employers.
