The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Madras and IIT Kanpur have announced a collaborative initiative to launch a four-year Bachelor of Cybersecurity (B.Cyber) programme from the 2026-27 academic session. The new undergraduate programme is designed to strengthen cybersecurity education and prepare students for emerging challenges in digital security through specialised academic training. For the inaugural admission cycle, the two institutes will conduct a joint selection process, allowing eligible candidates to opt for either IIT Madras or IIT Kanpur. Although admissions will be coordinated jointly, students will pursue the programme entirely at the institute they choose, following that campus's academic regulations.
Joint Admission Process for the First Batch
The first batch of the B.Cyber programme will be selected through a common admission framework. Since IIT Kanpur had already initiated the admission process for the inaugural cohort, IIT Madras will participate using the same shortlist of eligible candidates. Applicants who qualify through the ongoing selection process will have the opportunity to indicate their preferred campus. After admission, students will complete the entire programme at their selected institute without any transfer between campuses.
Separate Academic Programmes and Independent Degrees
While admissions are being coordinated jointly, the academic delivery of the programme will remain independent at both institutions. Each IIT will follow its own curriculum structure, academic policies, evaluation methods and campus facilities. On successful completion of the programme, students will receive a bachelor's degree awarded by the institute where they are enrolled. This ensures that both institutions retain their independent academic identity while collaborating on admissions.
Future Admission Process Will Not Use JEE Scores
The institutes have indicated that future admission cycles for the B.Cyber programme are expected to adopt a dedicated selection model instead of relying on JEE scores. Under the proposed process, candidates will first appear for an aptitude assessment focusing on areas such as mathematics, logical reasoning and cybersecurity fundamentals. Those who qualify will advance to a hackathon-based evaluation designed to assess programming ability, analytical thinking and practical cybersecurity skills. Final admissions are expected to be based on performance in these stages.
Focus on Cybersecurity Education
The launch of the B.Cyber programme reflects the growing demand for professionals with specialised cybersecurity expertise across government, industry and research sectors. By introducing a dedicated undergraduate degree, IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur aim to create a strong academic pathway for students interested in cyber defence, digital infrastructure security and related technologies. Candidates interested in the programme should monitor official announcements from both IITs for detailed admission schedules, eligibility requirements and future admission guidelines.
