IIT Kharagpur & Santech Global Launch Semiconductor & Quantum Centre

IIT Kharagpur and Santech Global have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence in Semiconductor and Quantum Technologies in Kolkata. The initiative aims to strengthen research, development, and innovation in strategic technologies within the Indo-Pacific region.

 

Focus of the Centre of Excellence

The newly established centre will focus on:

  • Semiconductors: Advanced research to enhance secure and resilient semiconductor supply chains
  • Quantum Technologies: Developing applications in computing, communication, and cryptography
  • Artificial Intelligence: Leveraging AI for innovative solutions in technology and industry
  • Collaborative R&D: Bringing together academic researchers and industry leaders for applied research

The collaboration supports the U.S.-India Technology for Resilient and United Supply-chain Transformation (TRUST) initiative, which seeks to boost innovation and ensure stable technology ecosystems in the Indo-Pacific region.

 

MoU Signing Ceremony

The MoU was signed at the American Centre, Kolkata, with key participants including:

  • Kathy Giles-Diaz, U.S. Consul General
  • Dr. Santosh Mukherjee, Santech Global
  • Dr. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur
  • Deans and faculty members of IIT Kharagpur

Consul General Giles-Diaz highlighted that the partnership exemplifies the growing U.S.-India relationship and emphasised the importance of building a resilient technology ecosystem through academic and business collaborations.

The Centre of Excellence is expected to:

  • Advance critical and emerging technologies for national and global benefit
  • Foster industry-academia partnerships to accelerate applied research
  • Strengthen technology supply chains and innovation capabilities in semiconductors and quantum computing
