IIT Kharagpur Opens Admissions 2026 for Law and Policy Programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has opened applications for admission to its specialised law and public policy programmes for the twenty twenty-six academic session. Admissions are being conducted through the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) and the Centre of Excellence in Public Policy, Law and Governance (CoEPPLG). The institute is inviting applications for LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law), LL.M., and Master’s in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) programmes.
Law and Policy Programmes Offered at IIT Kharagpur
RGSOIPL, established in two thousand six, is the only law school within the IIT system with a dedicated focus on intellectual property, technology law, and interdisciplinary legal studies. The programmes integrate legal education with science, technology, and governance frameworks.
LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law)
The three-year full-time LL.B. (Honours) programme is designed mainly for graduates from engineering, science, technology, medicine, and allied disciplines seeking a transition into legal practice.
Eligibility Criteria
- First Class Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, or Medicine
- OR First Class Master’s degree in Science or Pharmacy
- OR First Class MBA with one of the above qualifications
- Minimum sixty percent marks or CGPA six point five, if First Class is not awarded
- Final-year candidates may apply provisionally
Selection Process
Admission will be through a Computer-Based Test (CBT) covering mathematics aptitude, science aptitude, English, logical reasoning, legal aptitude, and current affairs.The test will be conducted in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, with no negative marking.
Application Fee
- ₹3,000 for General and OBC male candidates
- ₹1,500 for female, third gender, SC, ST, PwD, and EWS candidates
LL.M. Programme
RGSOIPL offers a two-year LL.M. programme with specialisations in Intellectual Property Law, Criminal Law, and International Law.
Eligibility Criteria
- First Class in five-year LL.B./B.L.
- OR First Class in three-year LL.B./B.L. with a Bachelor’s degree of minimum three years
- Final-year students are eligible to apply provisionally
Admission will be based on a Computer-Based Test, conducted in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.
Application Fee
- ₹4,000 for General and OBC male candidates
- ₹2,000 for female, third gender, SC, ST, PwD, and EWS candidates
Master’s in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG)
The MPPLG is a two-year full-time postgraduate programme offered by CoEPPLG. It aims to prepare graduates for roles in government, policy think tanks, civil society organisations, industry, international institutions, and academia.
Eligibility Criteria
- Bachelor’s degree of minimum four years in Science, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Commerce, or Arts
- Minimum sixty-five percent marks or CGPA seven point zero for General, OBC, and EWS
- Minimum sixty percent marks or CGPA six point five for SC, ST, and PwD
- Upper age limit: thirty years for General, OBC, EWS; thirty-five years for SC, ST, PwD as on January One, twenty twenty-six
Selection Process
- Computer-Based Written Test
- Group Discussion and Personal Interview for shortlisted candidates
Entrance tests will be held in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.
Application Fee

- ₹1,500 for female, third gender, SC, ST, PwD, and EWS candidates
