This year marks a major overhaul in the MBA admission process for several Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). With the completion of CAT 2025, candidates have three distinct routes to apply for IIM‑PGP: JAP 2026, CAP 2026, and SAP 2026. Each pathway differs in participating institutes, application format, and shortlisting criteria, offering aspirants more flexibility and choice in MBA admission.
New IIM Admission Streams 2026: JAP, CAP and SAP Defined
The three admission routes for MBA 2026 are designed to simplify and diversify access to IIMs. JAP 2026 is the newest among them, launched by four IIMs. CAP and SAP have existed earlier, but with altered participation this year.
Overview of Admission Routes
Some IIMs (e.g. IIM Udaipur) have opted out of CAP this year.
What JAP 2026 Means for CAT Aspirants?
Launched in September 2025, JAP 2026 allows a unified application to four IIMs — coordinated by IIM Raipur. Candidates need only one registration post‑CAT to apply to all four institutes. Shortlisting and interview coordination will be handled centrally. After CAT 2025 results are out, eligible candidates can register for JAP 2026. The application timelines and detailed admission policies — including CAT cut‑offs, WAT/PI rounds, weightage criteria — will be shared by the participating IIMs.
CAP and SAP Continue: What Has Changed in 2026
The familiar IIM CAP remains an option, but with fewer participating institutes this cycle. CAP 2026 will follow the usual route: shortlisting with CAT percentile, followed by WAT and PI rounds conducted jointly. For candidates who miss CAP shortlisting, SAP 2026 offers a second chance. SAP is limited to IIMs with vacant seats post‑CAP, and typically uses a relaxed cutoff compared to CAP.
CAT Score Cut‑offs and Shortlisting Criteria
Shortlisting for all three routes will primarily rely on CAT 2025 percentile. Reports suggest that for general‑category candidates, the overall CAT cut‑off for newer IIMs may hover around 95 percentile, with possible sectional cut‑offs. Beyond CAT scores, selection will consider academic record, work experience (if any), and diversity parameters, depending on the institute and its admission policy.
What Aspirants Should Do Now
With multiple admission routes available, CAT 2025 test‑takers should:
- Choose preferred IIMs and check which process they belong to (JAP / CAP / SAP)
- Keep final CAT 2025 scorecard ready for post‑result application
- Track official notifications from participating IIMs for WAT/PI registration windows
- Plan application preferences carefully — especially if applying through JAP to multiple institutes
