ICAI Launches Data Protection Audit Certification with the introduction of the Data Protection Compliance & Audit Certification (DPCAC) programme. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has commenced the inaugural batches at its Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad. The programme has been introduced through the Digital Accounting and Assurance Board (DAAB).
DPCAC Programme Launched by ICAI DAAB
The certification programme has received strong initial participation. According to ICAI, more than 100 members from 16 states registered for the first batch. Due to the response, two batches were started simultaneously at the Hyderabad centre.
The DPCAC programme has been conceptualised in the context of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which establishes a regulatory framework for processing digital personal data in India. ICAI stated that the initiative reflects growing professional demand in areas such as data protection, governance, and digital assurance.
The certification aims to enhance professional capacity in compliance management, governance structures, consent mechanisms, technical safeguards, and audit methodologies. The institute indicated that the course is designed to equip chartered accountants with the knowledge required to address regulatory and operational obligations arising from the new law.
Programme Structure and Assessment Framework
The DPCAC certification is structured as a three-day programme. It includes classroom sessions, application-based case studies, and a capstone project.
ICAI stated that the programme incorporates assessment mechanisms to ensure conceptual understanding as well as practical competence. The structure is intended to provide both theoretical grounding and hands-on exposure in data protection compliance and audit processes.
The institute highlighted that the launch aligns with India’s expanding digital ecosystem and the increasing need for structured compliance frameworks in data governance.
ICAI Developing Information Systems Audit Standards
In addition to launching the certification programme, ICAI is developing a comprehensive Information Systems Audit Standards (ISAS) framework. According to the institute, the proposed standards will cover:
- IT governance
- Risk management
- Internal control systems
- Cybersecurity
- Digital data protection
The framework is expected to include dedicated auditing standards related to cybersecurity and digital data environments. ICAI stated that the initiative aims to strengthen audit processes in technology-driven organisations and enhance digital assurance practices across sectors.
