The Indian Air Force has launched a GATE-based entry scheme for Technical Branch officers, allowing eligible engineering graduates to bypass the AFCAT exam.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has recently announced an innovative GATE-based entry scheme for candidates aspiring to join its Technical Branch. This new initiative allows eligible engineering graduates to bypass the traditional Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) written examination, streamlining the recruitment process for technically skilled individuals.
Under this new scheme, candidates who have valid scores from the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) can apply for direct shortlisting to the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs). This means that those who qualify through GATE will be able to skip the AFCAT written exam and proceed directly to the interview stage at AFSBs.
How to Apply for IAF Technical Branch Using GATE Scores in 2026?
Eligible candidates interested in applying for the Technical Branch can utilize their GATE scores for this new entry route. The IAF has stated that candidates applying through this method will be shortlisted based on their merit, allowing them to undergo further testing at the AFSBs.
IAF Recruitment Process: AFCAT Still the Main Entry Route
Despite the introduction of the GATE-based entry scheme, the IAF has clarified that the AFCAT will continue to be the standard entry route for all branches, including the Technical Branch. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can apply through either the AFCAT or the GATE Score Entry, or even both, depending on their qualifications.
AFCAT 02/2026 Notification: Important Dates
The launch of the GATE-based entry scheme coincides with the release of the AFCAT 02/2026 notification. This notification pertains to courses commencing in July 2027. The application process for AFCAT 02/2026 began on May 20, 2026, and will remain open until June 19, 2026. Notably, candidates applying through the GATE Score Entry and those eligible for the NCC Special Entry are exempt from paying the AFCAT exam fee.
