Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas 2025: School & College Holiday

The observance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Day (Shaheedi Diwas) 2025 has prompted questions across educational institutions in northern India about whether schools and colleges will remain shuttered on November 24 or November 25. The day marks the Guru’s sacrifice in the year 1675, when he stood for religious freedom during the Mughal era. Several states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and the union territory of Chandigarh traditionally observe this occasion as a public holiday. Now, educational boards in these regions, as well as in the Delhi‑NCR area, are awaiting official circulars to confirm closure dates.

Why the Holiday Matters for Educational Institutions?

Educational institutions often use the day both for remembrance and to allow students and staff to participate in community gatherings honouring the ninth Sikh Guru. In the current year, the 350th anniversary of his martyrdom adds extra significance to the event. Schools and colleges must therefore monitor announcements from respective state governments and district education offices. In some cases the holiday has been shifted—for example, the government of Uttar Pradesh has officially notified that the holiday will move from November 24 to November 25, 2025 across its institutions.

Current Status in Delhi‑NCR and Northern States

Before the table below, note that the status for schools and colleges across regions remains subject to final orders. Families, students and teachers are advised to verify local institution notices.

What Students and Parents Should Do?

Since many schools and colleges may pause academic activities on account of the observance, students and parents should check for the following:

• Whether the institution has issued a formal circular specifying the holiday date.
• If classes are rescheduled or moved online due to the closure.
• Any changes in internal tests or assignments that were planned around November 24–25.
