In a significant step towards inclusive education and equal opportunity, the Government of India is set to provide free online coaching for major competitive examinations. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to support aspirants from underprivileged and marginalized backgrounds who face financial and access barriers to quality preparation resources. Under the programme, the Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Physics Wallah Foundation, an established online education platform, to implement structured online coaching for aspirants across the country
Who Will Benefit and How It Works?
The scheme primarily targets candidates belonging to:
- Scheduled Castes (SCs)
- Other Backward Classes (OBCs)
- Children covered under the PM CARES for Children Scheme
Each year, thousands of eligible aspirants will be selected through a merit‑based process to receive free coaching support for a range of competitive examinations.
Once selected, candidates will gain access to:
- Structured live and recorded online classes
- Test series and mock exams
- Study material and previous years’ questions
- Mentorship and doubt‑clearing sessions
- Counselling and academic guidance
These features are designed to ensure aspirants get comprehensive preparation on par with traditional paid coaching services.
Exams Covered and Objectives
While exact lists of exams may vary each year, the programme is expected to support preparation for some of the most competitive tests in the Indian education and recruitment landscape, including:
- Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE)
- Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams
- Banking recruitment exams
- Other national‑level competitive tests for employment or academic entry
The primary objective of the initiative is to break down economic and geographic barriers in competitive exam preparation, helping candidates from less advantaged backgrounds compete on equal footing with their peers. The initiative also aligns with larger goals of inclusive human resource development and equitable access to educational opportunities across India
Selection and Participation
Participation in this free coaching programme will be merit‑based, with candidates shortlisted through an online portal or selection process. Once chosen, learners will be enrolled in courses and provided with access to all instructional content and support services throughout the coaching duration.
Broader Context and Similar State Initiatives
This national move follows a growing trend of free or subsidised coaching efforts at both central and state levels. Several states have launched programmes offering free coaching to government school students or economically weaker sections for exams like JEE, NEET, CUET, UPSC and state services, reflecting a broader commitment to educational equity
