GATE 2026 XE Question Paper Analysis OUT; Difficulty, Good Attempts

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati successfully conducted the GATE 2026 Engineering Sciences (XE) examination on February 7, 2026, during the morning shift (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM). Candidates who appeared for the exam have shared their feedback, and the GATE 2026 XE question paper analysis indicates that the paper was moderate to difficult overall. According to student reactions, the paper tested strong conceptual clarity and numerical application skills, especially in core technical sections. While some sections were time-consuming, candidates found the General Aptitude section scoring.

GATE 2026 XE Exam: Overall Difficulty Level

As per initial analysis:

  • Overall difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
  • General Aptitude (GA): Easy and scoring
  • Engineering Mathematics: Moderate to difficult
  • Technical sections: Conceptual with lengthy numerical problems

Several candidates reported that managing time was a key challenge, particularly in sections involving calculations and statement-based questions.

Section-Wise Analysis of GATE 2026 XE

  • General Aptitude:Easy to moderate; helped candidates balance tougher technical sections.
  • Solid Mechanics & Fluid Mechanics:Considered among the most challenging, with numerically intensive and concept-based questions.
  • Materials Science:Moderate difficulty; required clarity of fundamentals.
  • XE-D (Mechanical Sciences):Moderate level and closely aligned with Mechanical Engineering GATE previous year questions (PYQs).
  • XE-E:Lengthy section, making time management difficult.
  • Energy Science (XE-I):Introduced as a new sectional paper this year; questions were concept-oriented and unfamiliar to some candidates.

Overall, a higher number of statement-based and numerical answer type (NAT) questions increased the complexity of the paper.

Good Attempts and Cutoff Expectations

Experts suggest that candidates with strong preparation and good accuracy could perform well despite the paper’s difficulty.

  • Expected good attempts: Moderate range
  • Due to the challenging nature of the paper, the expected cutoff for GATE 2026 XE may be on the higher side, especially for competitive sections.

What’s Next for Candidates?

The official GATE 2026 answer key is expected to be released by late February 2026 on the official GATE website. Candidates will be able to download the response sheet, calculate probable scores, and raise objections if required. The GATE 2026 result is scheduled to be announced on March 19, 2026.Candidates are advised to stay updated with official notifications and begin planning for PSU recruitment, MTech admissions, or further exam stages based on their expected performance.
