GATE 2026 Timetable Released by IIT Roorkee with New Papers & Updates

IIT Roorkee released the full GATE 2025 timetable on Tuesday, giving clarity to engineering aspirants across India. The exam will be held on February 01, 02, 15, and 16, with two sessions every day. The update also introduces major reforms for the upcoming cycle.

GATE 2025 Updated Schedule and New Exam Structure

The institute has shared a detailed timetable to help candidates plan their preparation better. The February schedule covers four days and includes morning and afternoon sessions. This structure follows the pattern used in recent years.

IIT Roorkee has also confirmed that the exam will feature a wider and more flexible format in 2025. The changes reflect the evolving needs of engineering education and industry standards.

GATE 2025 Adds Two New Papers for More Choices

Before presenting the updates, it is important to note how the new papers expand opportunities for students. These additions open pathways to specialised areas within engineering and applied sciences.

IIT Roorkee has added two new subjects — Geomatics Engineering (GE) and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NM). With this, the total number of GATE papers has increased to thirty. These subjects will help candidates target emerging fields with strong industry relevance.

Eligibility Relaxed for Third-Year Undergraduate Students

The updated eligibility rules provide early exposure for students who want to test their readiness. This move also aligns GATE with global exam structures that support flexible entry points.

The institute now allows third-year undergraduate students to appear for the exam. This includes candidates studying in the 10+2+3 ongoing structure. The relaxed rule enables them to assess their preparation and plan future attempts.

Two-Paper Combination Flexibility Expanded

Before presenting the combination options, it is essential to highlight the aim behind this change. The decision supports interdisciplinary learning and broader academic exploration.

Candidates can now select two papers from an expanded list of permissible combinations. This offers more flexibility for students who wish to combine complementary subjects and widen their career choices.

GATE 2025 Exam Pattern: Objective and Skill-Focused

The exam pattern continues to evaluate conceptual clarity and analytical thinking. The structure remains fully objective.

GATE 2026 will include:• MCQs with one correct answer• MSQs with more than one correct answer• NAT questions requiring numerical input through a virtual keypad

These question types help test application skills and logical reasoning.

What the GATE 2026 Updates Mean for Aspirants

GATE remains a leading gateway to advanced technical education in India. The updated schedule and reforms strengthen its role in shaping engineering careers.

Candidates who qualify gain admission to MTech and ME programmes at IITs, NITs, and top engineering colleges. These programmes offer strong placements, research exposure, and access to advanced laboratories.

Career Opportunities Through GATE Scores

Before outlining the opportunities, it is useful to note the wide sectors that rely on GATE scores for recruitment or higher studies.

Many PSUs, including ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, and BHEL, continue to hire through GATE. These roles offer stable careers, strong entry-level salaries, retirement benefits, and work-life balance.

GATE also opens doors to research roles at CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, and other national scientific bodies. High-scoring candidates can join PhD programmes and build careers in teaching, research leadership, and academic policy.

Graduates from top institutes also attract placements at multinational companies through their MTech degrees, which remain valued in global technology sectors.
