GATE 2026 Strict Entry Checks and Banned Items List for Exam Day

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, conducting GATE 2026, has emphasised strict entry protocols and a comprehensive banned items list for exam venues across India. Candidates appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) must follow all rules carefully to avoid denial of entry on exam day.

GATE 2026 Entry Checks: Admit Card, ID and Biometric Verification

Candidates must prepare for thorough scrutiny at the examination centre. Entry will be allowed only after successful verification of key documents and biometric checks.

  • Carry a printed GATE 2026 admit card with a clear photograph on A4‑size paper.
  • Bring a valid original photo ID used during registration, such as Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, driving licence, or PAN card. Photocopies or digital versions will not be accepted.
  • Biometric authentication and document checks are mandatory at the entry gate.
  • Candidates should reach the centre 60 to 90 minutes before reporting time to complete all entry procedures.

Arriving late or without required documents can result in denial of entry, and no extra time will be granted for late arrivals.

Banned Items List for GATE 2026 Exam Hall

To maintain the integrity of the examination, numerous items are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall. Candidates must leave these items at home or outside the examination premises.

The following are strictly banned:

  • Mobile phones and smart watches of any kind.
  • Physical calculators, as a virtual scientific calculator is provided on the exam computer screen
  • Electronic gadgets including Bluetooth devices, pagers, tablets, laptops, etc.
  • Study material, books, printed or handwritten notes, loose sheets.
  • Bags, wallets, pouches, and personal stationery (pen/pencil boxes).

Violation of any of these rules can lead to immediate cancellation of candidature.

Rough Sheets, Dress Code and Conduct

Rough sheets will be provided by exam officials for calculations. Candidates must write their name and registration number on each sheet prior to use and return them after the exam. While there is no formal dress code, candidates are advised to wear simple, comfortable clothing without metallic accessories, watches, belts, or shoes with complicated fasteners to avoid delays during security checks. Candidates must also follow all instructions given by invigilators throughout the exam. Any misconduct or failure to comply with the exam code of conduct may lead to disciplinary action. The emphasis on strict entry checks and banned items reflects the examination authority’s efforts to uphold fairness and transparency in the conduct of GATE 2026.
