GATE 2026 Registration, Dates, Fees and Application Process

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 is scheduled as one of India’s most prestigious examinations for engineering graduates. IIT Guwahati is coordinating the exam this year, in collaboration with IISc Bangalore, under the guidance of the Ministry of Education. GATE scores are crucial for admissions to postgraduate programs, PSU recruitment, and research opportunities in India and abroad.

 

GATE 2026 Registration Timeline

The registration process for GATE 2026 began on August 28, 2025, and will close on September 28, 2025. Candidates missing this deadline can avail the extended registration window from September 29 to October 9, 2025, with the inclusion of a late fee.

GATE 2026 Application Fees

The application fees differ based on category and registration period.

GATE 2026 Exam Pattern

The GATE 2026 exam will be conducted online (Computer-Based Test) in English only. Each paper is three hours long, totaling 100 marks. The exam consists of two sections:

  • General Aptitude (GA): 15 marks
  • Subject-Specific Paper: 85 marks, based on the chosen engineering discipline

 

Negative Marking

  • 1/3 mark deducted for 1-mark MCQs
  • 2/3 mark deducted for 2-mark MCQs

The exam pattern ensures a comprehensive assessment of candidates’ analytical, reasoning, and technical abilities.

 

How to Apply for GATE 2026?

Candidates can complete the application process by following these steps:

  1. Visit the official GATE 2026 website: gate2026.iitg.ac.in
  2. Click on the GATE 2026 Registration link.
  3. Log in using existing credentials or create a new account.
  4. Fill in personal, academic, and contact details accurately.
  5. Upload scanned documents, including photographs, signature, and category certificates (if applicable).
  6. Pay the application fee online.
  7. Submit the completed application and download the confirmation page.
  8. Keep a printed copy of the confirmation page for future reference.

Early registration is advised to ensure smooth processing and avoid last-minute complications, especially given the high volume of applicants.
