GATE 2026 Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) examination has concluded successfully on 8 February 2026, with candidates appearing across Shift 1 and Shift 2. Based on initial reactions from test-takers, both sessions were rated moderate in overall difficulty, with a mix of conceptual, numerical, and statement-based questions. Students reported that while the paper was manageable for well-prepared candidates, a few questions required strong conceptual clarity and careful calculations.
GATE 2026 CSE Shift 2 Paper Analysis
The GATE 2026 CSE Shift 2 exam, held from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, was described as moderate to difficult by most candidates. Several questions were considered tricky, especially in the core Computer Science section. The General Aptitude section was rated easy to moderate, featuring mostly direct questions. Statement-based questions and Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) were manageable, though some required extra time. Memory-based feedback suggests that the Shift 2 paper felt slightly easier compared to Shift 1, despite a few lengthy questions. Candidates with good time management were able to attempt a satisfactory number of questions.
GATE 2026 CSE Shift 1 Paper Analysis
The Shift 1 examination, conducted from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, was largely concept-driven. Students reported that the Computer Science section contained several lengthy problems, while Mathematics and General Aptitude sections were of moderate difficulty. A noticeable increase in MSQ and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions was observed. Certain subjects such as Algorithms had higher weightage, while Computer Networks featured fewer questions. Topics like floating-point representation in COA and TCP connection-based problems were also highlighted. Overall, Shift 1 was considered moderately difficult, especially for candidates who struggled with time-consuming questions.
Topics Covered and Question Trends
Across both shifts, questions were reported from key areas including Algorithms, Data Structures, Functions, Graph Theory, COA, and Formal Languages. Graph theory questions were perceived as relatively tougher, while aptitude questions were mostly straightforward. Some memory-based questions included analogy-based aptitude problems and conceptual questions from Boolean Algebra and Compiler Design.
GATE 2026 Answer Key and Result Dates
As per the official timeline, IIT Guwahati is expected to release the GATE 2026 provisional answer key by the last week of February 2026. Candidates will be allowed to challenge the answer key by paying a fee of INR 500 per question. The GATE 2026 result will be declared on 19 March 2026, based on the final answer key. Qualified candidates will be able to download their GATE scorecard from 27 March 2026 onwards through the GOAPS portal.
Expected Cut-Off
Based on student feedback and exam difficulty, the expected qualifying cut-off for GATE 2026 CSE (General category) is likely to range between 32 and 36 marks, though official cut-offs will be announced along with the results. Candidates are advised to track official updates for answer keys, objection windows, and result announcements.
