The JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff is expected to increase across most categories. A higher number of applicants and exam difficulty are key factors influencing cutoff trends. The final cutoff will be announced after the declaration of JEE Main 2026 results.
The JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff is expected to increase compared to previous years, based on expert analysis and participation trends. The qualifying cutoff refers to the minimum percentile required to be eligible for JEE Advanced, and it differs from admission cutoffs used by institutes for seat allocation. The final cutoff will be officially released by the National Testing Agency after the declaration of the JEE Main 2026 results.
JEE Main 2026 Expected Qualifying Cutoff Percentile
Based on historical data, exam difficulty, and the increased number of applicants in 2026, experts have estimated the tentative qualifying cutoff percentiles for different categories. These values are indicative and may change slightly in the final announcement.
- Unreserved (UR): Around 93.3 percentile
- Gen-EWS: Around 81.4 percentile
- OBC-NCL: Around 80.7 percentile
- SC: Around 61.3 percentile
- ST: Around 48.2 percentile
- UR-PwD: Near 0.01 percentile
Candidates scoring above the category-wise qualifying cutoff will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026, subject to other eligibility conditions.
Difference Between Qualifying Cutoff and Admission Cutoff
The JEE Main qualifying cutoff determines eligibility for JEE Advanced, while the admission cutoff varies across institutes, branches, and counselling rounds. Admission cutoffs are usually much higher and depend on seat availability, choice filling, and candidate preferences. Understanding this distinction is important for candidates planning their counselling and admission strategy.
Factors Influencing JEE Main 2026 Cutoff
There is no fixed formula used to determine the JEE Main cutoff. However, several factors collectively influence the final qualifying percentile announced each year.
- Total number of candidates appearing for the exam
- Overall difficulty level of the question papers
- Availability of seats in participating institutes
- Performance distribution of candidates across shifts
An increase in applicant numbers generally leads to higher competition, which may result in a rise in cutoff percentiles.
JEE Main Cutoff Trends from Previous Years
An analysis of cutoffs from recent years shows fluctuations across categories. In years with a higher number of applicants, the qualifying cutoff has typically increased, while moderate difficulty levels have sometimes balanced the rise. Recent trends indicate that categories such as Gen-EWS and ST have seen noticeable increases in qualifying percentiles, largely due to growing participation in these segments.
What Candidates Should Expect for JEE Main 2026?
With record-level registrations reported for JEE Main 2026, competition is expected to remain intense. Candidates close to the predicted cutoff range should keep alternative admission options in mind while also preparing for JEE Advanced if eligible. The official JEE Main 2026 cutoff will be confirmed only after result declaration, and candidates are advised to rely on official notifications for final figures.
