Delhi High Court Orders NTA Expert Panel on UGC NET 2025 Answer Key Errors

The Delhi High Court has issued a significant order directing the National Testing Agency (NTA) to establish an expert committee to investigate alleged errors in the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) December 2025 answer key specifically for the History paper. The directive requires the panel to be constituted within four weeks and review the objections raised by candidates who appeared in the exam.

Background: UGC NET December 2025 Result Dispute

The UGC NET December 2025 exam was conducted by the NTA from 31 December 2025 to 7 January 2026, with the provisional answer key released on 14 January 2026 and the final result published on 4 February 2026. Following the final answer key’s publication, a group of candidates who appeared for the History paper alleged that nine questions and two translations were incorrect, which they claimed could adversely affect scores and qualification status. Petitions were filed in the Delhi High Court, challenging the credibility of these questions and the answer key evaluation process. These legal challenges led to the court’s intervention, resulting in the recent directive for deeper expert review.

High Court’s Directive to NTA: What It Means?

The court’s order instructs the NTA to constitute an expert panel, drawn from academic authorities and subject specialists, to thoroughly examine the objections raised against the History paper key. The panel is expected to examine:

  • The alleged incorrect questions identified by petitioners
  • The accuracy of translations in the History paper
  • Whether corrections, if any, could affect candidate scores

Under the order, the expert committee must be formed and begin its review within four weeks of the directive date. The NTA will need to consider the panel’s findings and potentially revise the answer key or related outcomes if discrepancies are validated.

Candidates’ Concerns and Legal Relief

Many candidates had reported concerns about the question paper quality and answer key accuracy soon after the provisional key was released. Objections were submitted during the answer key challenge window, but the board did not issue clarifications before declaring the final result. This left several aspirants disputing their results and qualifying status. The High Court’s intervention offers a formal mechanism for review, potentially leading to amendments in the final answer key or even revised results if the expert panel finds merit in the challenges.

What Happens Next?

Once the expert committee is formed, it will review the disputed questions and answer keys and prepare a reasoned assessment regarding the validity of the candidates’ claims. Based on the panel’s report, the NTA may revise the answer key, which could result in:

  • Recalculation of scores for affected candidates
  • Updated merit status or qualifying outcomes
  • Possible re-release of adjusted results

Those who filed petitions are seeking clarity and fairness in examination evaluation — especially because the UGC NET determines eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor recruitment roles across universities and colleges in India.

Broader Context of Answer Key Disputes

Answer key challenges and legal actions are not unique to this case. Similar disputes have previously led to expert review panels being constituted to examine contested questions in competitive exams, reinforcing mechanisms to ensure fairness and academic accuracy in evaluation.
