CBSE Introduces Second Board Exam for Class 10 Private Candidates in 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced the implementation of a new Two Board Examination Scheme for Class 10 students, set to take effect during the 2026 examination cycle. This initiative, which was first notified on June 25, 2025, aims to provide private candidates with an opportunity to enhance their academic performance through a second examination.

Under this newly established scheme, students who are taking the main board exams in 2026 will have the option to retake up to three subjects in a subsequent examination scheduled for May 2026. This is particularly beneficial for those who may not achieve their desired results in the initial attempt. The CBSE has released detailed guidelines for private candidates interested in participating in these second board exams.

Eligibility Criteria for the Second Board Examination

To qualify for the second board examination, candidates must fall into specific categories as defined by the CBSE. The eligibility criteria include:

  • Candidates who were placed in the Compartment category during the 2024-25 academic year.
  • Candidates who were also categorized as Compartment students but were eligible for other examinations in the same year and did not appear for the main examinations in 2026.

These candidates will be classified under the third-chance compartment category, allowing them a further opportunity to improve their scores.

Application Process for Private Candidates

The application process for the second board examination must be conducted online through the official CBSE website: CBSE Private Candidates Portal. It is crucial for applicants to understand that merely filling out the application form is insufficient; it must be accompanied by the payment of examination fees to be considered complete.

The submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) along with the requisite fees is divided into two distinct stages. To avoid incurring additional costs, candidates are encouraged to submit their applications during the first stage.

Examination Details and Fee Structure

CBSE has confirmed that the syllabus for the Second Board Examination in 2026 will mirror that of the first examination of the year. This consistency ensures that all candidates are evaluated uniformly, maintaining academic integrity across both examination attempts.

Examination AreaFee (Per Candidate per Subject)
IndiaRs. 2200
Nepal and Other CountriesRs. 2200

It is important to note that a late fee of Rs. 2000 will be applicable for candidates who fail to submit their fees on time. All fee payments must be made through online channels, reinforcing the CBSE's commitment to a digital-first approach.

Important Guidelines for Candidates

CBSE has established a robust compliance framework to ensure that candidates adhere to the application process. Key points include:

  • Candidates must carefully select their examination city, as this choice cannot be altered after submission.
  • Applications submitted without successful fee payment will be automatically cancelled without prior notice.

These guidelines are designed to streamline the application process and ensure that all candidates are treated fairly and equitably.
