The Union Education Minister has reportedly asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to submit a detailed explanation regarding portal crashes, payment gateway failures, and operational lapses faced by applicants. The controversy emerged shortly after CBSE activated the online re-evaluation and scanned answer sheet access system for Class 12 students. Many candidates claimed they were unable to log into the portal, complete payment transactions, or access their answer sheets due to heavy server load and technical disruptions.

Thousands of students across India reportedly experienced technical difficulties while applying for answer sheet verification and re-evaluation. Complaints included delayed OTPs, portal crashes, unsuccessful payment confirmations, inaccessible pages, and blank or blurred scanned answer sheets. According to reports, some candidates were even shown unusually high payment amounts while trying to access answer sheets online, creating confusion among students and parents. Several users also complained that the application portal stopped functioning during the final stages of submission. The issue gained national attention after students raised concerns on social media and political leaders sought government intervention over the matter.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has reportedly taken serious cognisance of the technical failures affecting the CBSE re-evaluation process. Officials have been directed to explain the reasons behind the portal disruptions, preparedness measures, and accountability of agencies managing the digital process. The ministry’s intervention comes amid increasing criticism regarding the implementation of the new On-Screen Marking (OSM) evaluation system introduced for the 2026 board examinations. Sources stated that the Education Ministry has asked CBSE to submit a comprehensive report covering:

• Server downtime issues
• Payment gateway failures
• Portal accessibility problems
• Operational lapses
• Corrective measures taken by CBSE

CBSE Responds to Technical Issues and Extends Deadline

CBSE has acknowledged that students faced difficulties due to exceptionally high traffic on the portal during peak hours. The board stated that more than 98.6 lakh answer sheets were evaluated under the digital OSM system this year and a large number of students applied for scanned copies within a short period. In response to the complaints, CBSE extended the last date for obtaining scanned answer sheets till May 24, 2026. Authorities also confirmed that the re-evaluation portal will remain open for additional days after scanned copies are dispatched to candidates. The board further assured students that corrective technical interventions are being implemented to ensure that applicants are not affected due to server overload or transaction failures.

CBSE OSM Evaluation System Faces Scrutiny

The newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system has also come under scrutiny after students and teachers raised concerns regarding evaluation transparency and unexpected score reductions in several subjects. Reports indicated that CBSE had to manually re-evaluate thousands of answer sheets after scanning quality issues allegedly affected the assessment process. Subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry reportedly witnessed a higher number of complaints related to missing or unchecked answers. Education experts have stated that while digital evaluation can improve transparency and reduce calculation errors, large-scale implementation requires stronger technical infrastructure and adequate preparation to avoid academic disruption.

MPs and Education Leaders Raise Concerns Over CBSE Process

Apart from students and parents, several political leaders and Members of Parliament have also expressed concern regarding the CBSE evaluation and re-evaluation framework. Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas recently wrote to the Education Minister seeking an independent review of the evaluation process and portal failures. Another MP, Thamizhachi Thangapandian, also raised concerns regarding login failures, payment errors, and inaccessible webpages experienced by students during the application process. The letter reportedly highlighted:

• Decline in Class 12 pass percentage
• Technical failures in the re-evaluation portal
• Fear among students regarding mark reduction after rechecking
• Need for moderation during transition to digital evaluation

CBSE Re-Evaluation 2026 Fee Structure and Process

CBSE revised the re-evaluation fee structure this year to make the process more affordable for students. According to the updated rules:

• Scanned copy of answer sheet: INR 100
• Verification of marks: INR 100
• Re-evaluation fee: INR 25 per question

Earlier, students reportedly had to pay much higher charges for accessing answer sheets and verification services. Candidates applying for re-evaluation are advised to carefully monitor official announcements and keep payment receipts and application confirmation copies for future reference.

CBSE has requested students and parents not to panic over the ongoing technical issues. The board stated that the purpose of the verification and re-evaluation mechanism is to ensure transparency and address genuine concerns in a structured manner. Officials also clarified that all reported complaints are being continuously reviewed and technical teams are working to stabilise the portal infrastructure.
