The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced a significant shift in the CBSE Class 10 Exam Pattern 2025, focusing on conceptual clarity and real-world application. As per the new framework, students will appear for two board examinations in a single academic year, offering greater flexibility and an opportunity to improve performance. The question paper structure will also change, with 50% of the paper based on competency-driven assessment. This reform is being implemented in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, which promotes analytical learning over rote memorisation.
CBSE Class 10 2025 Competency-Based Question Framework
Under the revised assessment model, CBSE has restructured its question paper design to enhance higher-order thinking skills among students. The focus will now be on evaluating a student’s understanding, application, and interpretation abilities instead of simple recall. The competency-based portion will include:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Case-based and source-based questions
- Data interpretation problems
- Situation-based analytical questions
The remaining 50% of the paper will consist of short-answer and long-answer questions designed to test conceptual depth and written expression. This balanced mix is expected to ensure fair assessment across learning levels.
Twice-a-Year Board Exams: What Changes for Students?
With the introduction of two board exam attempts per year, students will no longer be restricted to a single high-pressure examination cycle. This new system allows students to appear in both sessions and retain the better score for final certification. CBSE officials have indicated that the dual-exam format aims to:
- Reduce exam-related stress
- Offer performance improvement opportunities
- Encourage continuous learning throughout the academic year
- Provide academic flexibility without compromising standards
This change is expected to benefit lakhs of students appearing for the Class 10 board examination each year.
What Schools and Students Must Prepare For?
Before the full implementation of the revised pattern, schools are expected to realign their teaching methods with the updated assessment framework. Emphasis will now be placed on:
- Activity-based classroom learning
- Concept application in practical situations
- Regular practice of MCQs and case-based questions
- Strengthening subject fundamentals rather than memorisation
Students preparing for the upcoming board cycles are advised to focus on accuracy, time management, and conceptual understanding across all subjects.
First CBSE Class 10 New-Pattern Boards Expected in 2026
The revised assessment structure will be applicable for students appearing in the Class 10 board examinations scheduled from 2026 onward. CBSE will release detailed subject-wise marking schemes and sample question formats well before the examination cycle begins. With the revised exam system, CBSE aims to modernise school education and prepare students for competitive academic and professional environments through skill-oriented evaluation.
