The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced fresh guidelines for the Class ten second board exam, scheduled to be held in May two thousand twenty-six. The updates were shared during a national webinar conducted on November twenty and focus on eligibility rules for absent students, compartment cases, and those aiming to improve their marks. Under the new two-board exam structure, CBSE has made it clear that the second exam is not a substitute for the first board exam. Instead, it is an additional opportunity created for students who missed specific papers due to valid reasons or wish to enhance their performance.
Who is Eligible for the Class 10 Second Board Exam?
CBSE has linked eligibility entirely to the number of subjects missed in the February session.
Eligibility Criteria at a Glance
The board underlined that students absent in three or more subjects in the February session will receive an Essential Repeat status. These students will not be considered for the May session and must appear next year.
Compartment and Improvement Rules for 2026
CBSE clarified that students failing in up to two subjects can attempt the compartment exam. Meanwhile, students aiming to improve their marks can appear in the Class ten second exam, provided they fit within the board’s eligibility structure. The guidelines stress that the second exam is intended only for a limited group. It is not meant to create two separate attempts for all students.
Subjects Offered in the Second Board Exam
CBSE has restricted the subjects available in the May exam to maintain standardisation. The board will conduct the second exam only for subjects where fifty percent or more marks come from the external written component. Subjects relying heavily on internal assessment will not have a second-exam option.
How Many Students May Appear?
During the national webinar, CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh stated that the board expects up to forty percent of students to appear for each subject in the second exam. This percentage may vary depending on attendance levels and performance gaps in the February session.
