The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has scheduled the 2026 board examinations to begin on 17 February 2026 for both Class 10 and Class 12. This year introduces updated rules on exam attempts and timings to improve flexibility and reduce stress for students.
The CBSE Board Exam 2026 will commence from 17 February 2026 for students of Class 10 and Class 12 across all affiliated schools. This year’s exams include several key changes, such as updated exam regulations, revised internal assessment requirements, and provisions for reattempts for eligible students.
CBSE Board Exam 2026 Important Dates and Schedule
The CBSE 2026 timetable specifies fixed dates and timings for theory exams. Students should note the following key dates:
- CBSE Board Exam Start Date: 17 February 2026
- Exam Timing: Approximately 10:30 am to 1:30 pm (may vary by subject)

CBSE Board Exam 2026: New Rules and Retake Options for Students
CBSE has introduced a two-exam system for Class 10 from 2026, with the first exam in February being mandatory for all students and the second in May optional for those who want to improve their scores. Students can reappear in up to three subjects to better their performance, with the higher score between the two attempts counted in the final result. Those who fail or miss three or more subjects in the first exam won’t be eligible for the second and must wait until the next year. The changes aim to reduce pressure and give flexibility while continuing internal assessments and attendance requirements.
First Exam Mandatory
All students must appear in the first scheduled examination beginning 17 February 2026. Performance in this exam will form the basis of the final evaluation.
Optional Retake
Eligible students may reattempt specific subjects to improve their scores. Details on the number of subjects allowed for retake and conditions will be included in the official notification issued by the board.
CBSE Board Exam 2026 Timing and Guidelines
Exams will generally be conducted in the forenoon session, starting around 10:30 am and ending by 1:30 pm. Certain subjects may have slightly different timings. Students should check the official date sheet for exact schedules.
CBSE Board Exam 2026: Internal Assessments and Eligibility
CBSE has emphasized the importance of continuous internal assessment and adherence to attendance requirements. Schools are responsible for ensuring accurate internal evaluations and reporting, which form part of the eligibility criteria for the board exams.
