CBSE announces a new curriculum focusing on AI and computational thinking for Classes 3-8, starting in 2026-27, enhancing students' tech skills.

CBSE Introduces AI and Computational Thinking Curriculum for 2026-27

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced the introduction of a curriculum centered on Computational Thinking (CT) and Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the academic year 2026-27. This initiative aligns with the directives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023, marking a significant step towards integrating modern technological concepts into the educational framework.

Overview of the New Curriculum

This innovative curriculum is set to be implemented for students from Class 3 to Class 8. Its primary goal is to enhance essential skills such as logical reasoning, problem-solving, and pattern recognition. By familiarizing students with AI in a responsible and ethical manner, CBSE aims to prepare them for a future where technology plays a pivotal role in everyday life.

Training Modules for Teachers

To ensure effective implementation, CBSE has developed a comprehensive training module that encompasses various sub-topics, including:

  • Understanding of CT and AI
  • Interdisciplinary approaches
  • Pedagogy and application
  • Assessment techniques
  • Ethical considerations

This training is designed to help educators integrate AI and computational thinking across various subjects, including Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and languages, rather than treating it as a standalone subject.

Workshops and Professional Development

As part of the rollout, CBSE has instructed schools to conduct district-level discussions and workshops focused on CT and AI. These one-day offline sessions will emphasize sharing best practices and enhancing teacher capabilities. Schools are encouraged to collaborate through Sahodaya School Complexes or similar groups, allowing for a broader exchange of ideas and resources.

Participation in these workshops will contribute to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) hours, and schools are required to maintain records of attendance. Selected presentations from these workshops may be nominated for national-level evaluation, with outstanding entries showcased at future National Teachers Conferences.

Expert-Led Sessions and Resources

In addition to workshops, CBSE plans to facilitate expert-led discussions conducted by designated lead schools. These sessions may be offered in both online and offline formats, featuring insights from internal and external experts in the field.

Furthermore, CBSE emphasizes the importance of utilizing digital learning resources, including educational broadcasts on the DD PM e-Vidya Channel CBSE 15, to support ongoing teacher training and student engagement. The Centres of Excellence (CoEs) will also play a crucial role by organizing regional workshops and orientation programs.

Implications for Students and Educators

This initiative is designed to foster an environment where computational thinking and AI can be seamlessly integrated into daily teaching practices. By equipping teachers with the necessary tools and knowledge, CBSE aims to empower them to create practical and interdisciplinary tasks for students. This approach will enable learners to explore fields such as coding, data science, and mathematics in a more engaging and relevant manner.

Moreover, the focus on responsible AI usage will ensure that students are educated about the social implications of technology, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the digital age.

Call to Action for Schools

CBSE has urged all affiliated schools to actively participate in this initiative by nominating teachers who would benefit from the upcoming training workshops. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the overall quality of education and ensure that students are well-prepared for a technology-driven future.
