CAT 2025 Slot 2 Quant: Arithmetic Dominates, Modern Maths Absent

CAT 2025 Slot 2 Quantitative Ability (QA) section focused primarily on Arithmetic and Number Systems, leaving candidates with predictable but calculation-intensive questions. The high weightage of Arithmetic demanded accuracy and speed, while modern mathematics questions were completely absent.

Students reported encountering three to four questions from Number Systems, three from Geometry, and one from Geometric Progression. This distribution made the section manageable for those comfortable with basic formulas and calculations but challenging under strict time constraints.

High Arithmetic Weightage Makes Quant Calculation-Heavy

Experts highlighted that the absence of Modern Maths topics such as matrices, set theory, or probability reduced surprises but increased the reliance on lengthy arithmetic computations. Aspirants needed to carefully manage time, especially on multi-step percentage, ratio, and average problems.

Many candidates who were strong in basics like averages, percentages, and ratios managed to solve questions efficiently, while others struggled to maintain speed and accuracy simultaneously.

Geometry and Number Systems Questions in Slot 2

In addition to Arithmetic, Geometry and Number Systems formed a significant portion of the paper. Geometry contributed three questions, testing candidates’ knowledge of shapes, angles, and areas. Number Systems appeared in three to four questions, often embedded in larger problems involving sequences and divisibility.

The one question on Geometric Progression required analytical thinking rather than complex calculations. Experts noted that solving these questions correctly depended on conceptual clarity and precise calculation skills.

Overall Take on Slot 2 Quant

Overall, Quant in Slot 2 was moderate in difficulty but demanded careful time management due to the volume of arithmetic calculations. Candidates with a strong foundation in basic concepts could attempt a higher number of questions with confidence, whereas those relying on shortcuts or guesswork faced difficulties.

The absence of modern mathematics questions allowed aspirants to focus on problem-solving speed and accuracy, making Quant slightly more predictable than other sections.
