CAT 2025 Slot 1 concluded with candidates reporting a lower difficulty level than CAT 2024, especially in VARC and Quantitative Ability. Early feedback suggests higher attempts and better accuracy, triggering strong expectations of a cut-off rise across most B-schools. Experts note that when a paper is easier, score clustering increases, intensifying percentile competition.
CAT 2025 Slot 1 Difficulty Level Compared to 2024
As per structured feedback from candidates and coaching analysts, CAT 2025 Slot 1 was rated easy to moderate, whereas CAT 2024 Slot 1 had a moderate to difficult balance. VARC was dominated by direct reading-based questions, LRDI had one tough and one moderate set, and Quant relied heavily on Arithmetic and Algebra with fewer tricky Geometry questions. Average attempts increased across all 3 sections, a strong indicator of cut-off pressure. The overall paper favored speed and accuracy rather than deep conceptual traps, which benefited well-prepared candidates and repeat test-takers.
Section-Wise Attempts and Difficulty Trend
Before looking at the indicative attempts, it is important to note that CAT cut-offs do not depend only on attempts but on normalized raw scores across all 3 slots. However, attempt data offers a strong preliminary signal. Based on early student inputs and expert reviews, the following trend has emerged:
The overall good attempt range of 43–50 questions is clearly higher than the CAT 2024 Slot 1 average, strengthening the probability of cut-off inflation in 2025.
Will CAT 2025 Cut-Offs Rise After Slot 1?
With higher raw scores expected from Slot 1, normalization will play a crucial role. If Slot 2 and Slot 3 remain moderate or difficult, Slot 1 candidates may witness slight downward scaling, but the overall percentile cut-offs are still likely to move upward. For reference, a 2–4 mark rise in raw score requirements can translate into a 0.2–0.6 percentile jump in the high-score band of 90–99 percentile. For new and baby IIMs, this may tighten shortlist margins significantly.
Normalization Key To Final CAT 2025 Result Impact
CAT follows a slot-wise normalization process to ensure fairness across shifts. Even if Slot 1 was easier, its impact on final percentiles will depend on the relative performance of all 3 slots. However, in years where one slot turns out distinctly easier, scaled score compression is unavoidable, leading to higher effective cut-offs. Candidates targeting IIMs and top MBA colleges are advised to prepare for aggressive shortlisting benchmarks in CAT 2025, especially in the 90–98 percentile range, where competition will be densest.
