Calicut University is currently reviewing a first-semester MDC examination after it was discovered that the question paper repeated a set used in the previous academic year. Students and faculty raised concerns after noticing the similarity, prompting authorities to initiate a formal review. The incident has raised questions about the university’s exam moderation and vetting process.
Repeated Questions in MDC Psychology Paper Sparks Concern
The issue occurred in the first-semester MDC Psychology paper titled “Art of Stress Management”, conducted on November 25, 2025. Officials confirmed that the exam mirrored last year’s question paper, with the only difference being the updated year printed on top. This duplication triggered concerns among students regarding the integrity and preparation of university examinations. Typically, instructors are required to submit three separate sets of question papers for each exam. However, one of the repeated sets went unnoticed during cross-checking and was inadvertently included in the current examination. This has raised questions about the effectiveness of internal checks and quality control mechanisms followed by the university.
Board of Studies to Decide on Possible Re-Examination
In response to the situation, Calicut University officials stated that the matter has been referred to the Board of Studies. The board will determine whether a fresh examination needs to be conducted for students affected by the repeated questions. Although no formal complaints have been lodged by students so far, the administration has begun an internal review to understand how such an oversight occurred. Officials are also evaluating additional safeguards and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, including stricter question paper vetting procedures.
University Measures to Avoid Future Exam Errors
These steps aim to reassure students that future exams will be conducted without administrative lapses and that academic standards will be maintained. To strengthen the exam preparation process, Calicut University is expected to:
- Review and revise the current question paper submission process.
- Implement additional cross-checking measures to ensure no repetition occurs.
- Educate faculty about the importance of submitting original question papers.
- Introduce safeguards for multi-disciplinary course (MDC) examinations to maintain fairness and academic integrity.
