Calcutta University (CU) has proposed significant academic reforms for its undergraduate programmes, focusing on a shorter examination schedule and an increase in class days. The proposal was discussed by the Syndicate, the university’s highest decision-making body, shortly after Asutosh Ghosh assumed charge as the new full-time Vice-Chancellor. The move aims to address long-standing concerns over extended exam timelines that disrupt classroom teaching and stretch academic calendars beyond planned schedules.
New CU Academic Reforms Target Teaching Continuity
According to officials, the key objective behind the proposed changes is to ensure uninterrupted teaching-learning sessions across semesters. At present, prolonged examination periods often lead to long gaps in classroom instruction, affecting syllabus completion and student engagement. After the Syndicate meeting, the Vice-Chancellor confirmed that a dedicated committee has been formed to draft a detailed implementation roadmap for these reforms. The committee will examine how exam cycles can be shortened without compromising academic evaluation standards while ensuring that class hours are increased across undergraduate colleges affiliated with CU. The VC also stated that no official rollout timeline has been declared yet, as the proposal is currently at the planning and consultation stage.
Vacant Teaching Posts to Be Addressed Alongside Exam Reforms
Another critical issue highlighted during the discussion was the large number of vacant teaching positions at Calcutta University. These vacancies have placed added pressure on existing faculty members and have affected both postgraduate and professional programmes. University officials indicated that filling these posts would significantly improve the teacher-student ratio, ensure better coverage of course syllabi, and strengthen academic mentoring. The Vice-Chancellor noted that strengthening faculty strength is essential for the success of the proposed shorter exam cycle and expanded classroom instruction model. With improved staffing, the university expects to achieve smoother semester progression and timely academic assessments.
Why the Proposed CU Reforms Matter for UG Students?
The proposed academic restructuring is expected to bring multiple long-term benefits for undergraduate students. A compressed exam schedule could reduce idle periods during semesters, while more instructional days may contribute to better subject clarity and exam preparedness. Education experts believe such continuity in academic engagement can improve learning outcomes, reduce exam-related stress caused by prolonged assessment periods, and ensure better synchronization between teaching plans and evaluation timelines. However, university authorities have emphasized that the reforms will be implemented only after thorough consultation with stakeholders and final approval from academic bodies.
What Happens Next in the CU Reform Process?
For now, the Syndicate has only constituted a committee to study feasibility and execution strategies. The committee will submit recommendations regarding workload distribution, revised academic calendars, and staffing requirements. Only after this report is reviewed will Calcutta University move toward formal implementation. Students and faculty members are expected to be briefed once an official policy framework is approved by the university administration.
