Burdwan University Protest Turns Violent As SFI Demonstrates Over Result Delay. A scuffle broke out between police personnel and activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) outside Burdwan University in West Bengal during a protest over delays in exam results and student union elections. The demonstration took place near the university campus in the Purba Bardhaman district, where protesters gathered to demand faster publication of semester examination results and restoration of student union polls.
SFI Protest Over Delay In Semester Exam Results
Student activists organised the protest to highlight concerns regarding the alleged delay in publishing semester examination results. According to protesters, such delays create uncertainty for students waiting for academic progression and further admissions. During the demonstration, activists shouted slogans against the university administration and the state higher education authorities. They demanded immediate action to resolve the issue and ensure timely declaration of results in the future. Student representatives stated that delays in the result announcement have become a recurring issue, affecting hundreds of students every year.
Around 300 Activists Gathered Outside Campus
Police officials said that around 300 activists participated in the protest outside the campus gates. The protesters attempted to march toward the university premises and submit a memorandum of demands to the authorities. However, security personnel had set up barricades near the entrance of the campus to prevent large gatherings from entering the university grounds. The demonstration intensified when some protesters tried to push past the barricades and approach the campus gate.
Scuffle Breaks Out As Protesters Try To Breach Barricades
According to officials, the situation turned tense when protesters attempted to break through the police barricades and enter the campus area. This led to a brief scuffle between the demonstrators and police personnel deployed at the site. Some activists also reportedly tried to climb the university gate during the protest. Police stopped the protesters from entering the campus as the gathering was affecting nearby traffic movement and routine activities in the surrounding offices. Authorities later brought the situation under control, and no major injuries were reported during the incident.
Students Demand Early Publication Of Results And Union Polls
The protesting students said they wanted to meet the university’s vice chancellor or registrar to submit their memorandum of demands. Their key demands included:
- Immediate publication of pending semester examination results
- Timely academic evaluation and result declaration
- Conduct of student union elections in the university
Student leaders claimed that regular delays in result publication disrupt academic planning and create anxiety among students awaiting their academic outcomes.
