Engineering education in India has seen a major shift in student preferences. According to recent data released by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the overall enrolment rate for BTech courses rose to 75.07 % in the academic year 2024-25, up from 53.73 % in 2020-21.
Surge in Demand for AI & Computer Science Branches
The sharp rise in engineering enrolments has been driven primarily by newer disciplines such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), data science and computer science & engineering (CSE). AICTE data shows that students are flocking to these modern branches, citing strong job prospects and industry demand. Several states recorded exceptionally high fill-rates:
- Odisha: 94.23 % fill-rate in 2024-25
- Maharashtra: 93.36 % fill-rate in 2024-25
- West Bengal: 87.43 % in 2024-25
- Karnataka: 80.47 % in 2024-25
Institutions that adapted their curriculum to include AI, data science and allied areas even within core branches reported full enrolments. For example, one Mumbai institute recorded 100 % enrolment across branches by aligning syllabus with technology trends.
Decline in Traditional Core Engineering Branches
In contrast, core engineering branches such as civil and mechanical are witnessing troubling trends. The number of students opting for these disciplines has steadily declined since around 2022-23.
Academics attribute this to a combination of factors:
- Students increasingly favour less field-work and more indoor, digital roles.
- Job prospects in core branches are perceived as weaker compared to newer tech streams.
- Many colleges converting or reducing seats in mechanical/civil and increasing seats in CS and allied branches.
For instance, the intake in mechanical and civil engineering has dropped notably in some regions over the past five years.
What This Means for Engineering Education
The shift in enrolment trends signals both opportunities and challenges:
- Opportunities: The strong interest in AI, CSE and allied areas presents a chance for colleges to modernise their curriculum, invest in expertise, and align with global demand. AICTE has responded by creating model curricula that allow minor specialisations in data science and emerging tech for all branches.
- Challenges: The shrinking interest in core branches risks future shortages in civil, mechanical and infrastructure engineering talent. Industry needs in these domains remain significant. Experts warn of a “job crunch” if the supply-demand balance in tech branches overshoots.
- Institutional Implications: Colleges must adapt—either by strengthening core branches with modernisation or by innovating hybrid models combining core engineering with new-age tech like IoT, AI, robotics. AICTE has allowed students in core streams to take minor degrees in emerging tech to boost employability.
Key Data Snapshot
Final Thought
Engineering education in India is evolving. While digital and new-age tech disciplines are booming, the traditional core branches are facing declining interest. Institutions, regulators and students must recognise that engineering is not just about riding current trends—it must balance future infrastructure needs, industry realities and job markets. Students choosing BTech must evaluate not only the popularity of the branch but also long-term employability, industry alignment and personal interest. Universities and regulators must continue to innovate curricula, partnerships and employability pathways to ensure engineering remains relevant, viable and valuable
