The Bihar government has approved INR 2,271 crore to double the pre-matric scholarship amounts for students belonging to SC, ST, backward class (BC), and extremely backward class (EBC) categories. The decision was taken by the state cabinet to strengthen student welfare and improve access to education.
The revised scholarship rates will benefit nearly 27 lakh students across Bihar. The new financial support is aimed at helping students from economically weaker backgrounds continue their schooling without interruption.
Bihar Pre-Matric Scholarship Rates Revised for SC and ST Students
The cabinet has approved INR 519.64 crore specifically for revising scholarship rates for SC and ST students. The updated scholarship amounts have been doubled compared to the earlier figures set in 2011. The revised slabs vary by class level and residential status. The annual scholarship rates for SC/ST students are now:
- Classes 1 to 4: INR 1,200
- Classes 5 to 6: INR 2,400
- Classes 7 to 10: INR 3,600
- Residential students: INR 6,000 annually
These revised rates are expected to provide stronger financial support during the crucial school years.
BC and EBC Students to Receive Similar Scholarship Benefits
The Bihar cabinet has also made INR 1,751.56 crore available for backward class and extremely backward class students. The same revised scholarship structure will apply to BC and EBC categories under the updated scheme. This step is expected to expand educational opportunities for students from socially and economically disadvantaged communities.
Hostel Subsidy and Income Limit Increased for BC and EBC Scholarships
The government has proposed additional improvements for BC and EBC scholarship eligibility and support. The following key changes have been approved:
- Monthly hostel subsidy revised from INR 1,000 to INR 2,000
- Annual family income limit increased from INR 1.5 lakh to INR 3 lakh
- Additional approval of INR 117.98 crore for implementing these changes
These revisions are expected to make more students eligible for scholarship assistance.
Bihar Cabinet Approves Music College Project in Buxar
Along with scholarship reforms, the cabinet approved a revised project worth INR 87.81 crore to establish a music college in the name of Ustad Bismillah Khan in Buxar. The initiative is part of the state’s broader efforts to support education, cultural development, and student welfare. The scholarship expansion and related welfare decisions mark a significant step by the Bihar government towards improving educational access for lakhs of students in the state.
