The Bihar government has decided to remove the word “Fail” from the marksheets of students appearing for Bihar Board Class 10 and Class 12 examinations. The decision was announced by Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari during a review meeting. The Education Department will amend the existing rules, following which the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) will issue instructions for implementing the new terminology on marksheets.

Bihar Board Class 10, 12 Marksheets: What Will Change?

Under the proposed system, students who do not clear the BSEB Class 10 or Class 12 board examinations will no longer have the word “Fail” printed on their marksheets.

Instead, the marksheet will mention “Kaushal ke liye patra”, which translates to “Eligible for Skill Training”. The new terminology is intended to highlight alternative educational and vocational pathways available to students who do not achieve the required marks.

However, the change in terminology does not mean that students who fail the examination will be considered as having passed. The academic result will continue to reflect whether the student has met the prescribed requirements, while the new wording is intended to provide information about alternative skill-training opportunities.

The Bihar Education Department has said that examination marks should not be treated as the sole measure of a student's talent or potential.

Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari emphasised the need to protect students' morale and prevent unsuccessful examination attempts from becoming a lasting stigma. The government believes that students who struggle in board examinations should also be provided opportunities to develop practical and vocational skills.

Students who do not meet the academic requirements will be encouraged to explore skill-based and vocational training opportunities. According to the announcement, students can pursue skill-related programmes through the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination (BBOSE).

This provides students with an alternative route to continue their education and develop job-oriented skills rather than viewing an unsuccessful board examination as the end of their educational journey.

Along with removing the “Fail” tag, the Bihar Education Department has also announced one-month special classes for students appearing for the Matric supplementary examination.

These classes will provide additional academic support and preparation to students who have another opportunity to improve their results. The objective is to help students strengthen their preparation and increase their chances of clearing the supplementary examination.

The initiative gives students an opportunity to improve their academic performance rather than allowing one unsuccessful examination attempt to affect their future educational plans.

Bihar Board Education Reforms: No-Bag Saturdays

The decision regarding Bihar Board marksheets comes alongside other measures aimed at changing the learning environment in government schools.

Under the state's No-Bag Day initiative, government schools will operate for shorter hours on Saturdays, from 9:30 AM to 1 PM, instead of the regular 9:30 AM to 4 PM schedule followed from Monday to Friday.

The Saturday sessions are intended to provide students with opportunities to participate in activities beyond conventional textbook-based learning, including creative activities such as theatre and music.

Vidya Saathi App for Bihar Class 9 to 12 Students

The Bihar government has also launched the Vidya Saathi app for students in Classes 9 to 12. The platform is intended to connect students with teachers and provide academic support.

According to the latest reports, the initiative is expected to involve around 75,000 teachers, expanding access to academic assistance for students.

These initiatives indicate a broader shift towards combining traditional academic education with skill development, creative learning and digital support.
