A Bengaluru doctor, Dr R. Rangamanju, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing All India Rank 24 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024. He also emerged as the Karnataka state topper, making his success even more noteworthy. Dr Rangamanju’s journey is a powerful testament to persistence and self-belief. He cracked the exam on his sixth attempt, relying mostly on self-study and peer support rather than enrolling in formal coaching institutes. His unwavering dedication paid off in a big way.
From Medicine to Civil Service: A Passion for Public Service
Dr Rangamanju completed his MBBS from Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute. He attended National Public School, Rajajinagar, during his school years. Despite his stable medical career, he harboured a strong desire to serve the nation, a dream inspired by his late father, R. Ramesh, who was a respected IPS officer. Rangamanju often credits his father’s legacy as his biggest motivation. His mother’s constant encouragement also played a critical role throughout his repeated UPSC attempts.
Preparation Strategy: No Coaching, But a Smart Approach
What makes his achievement even more striking is that he did not opt for coaching for both Preliminary and Mains exams. Instead, he chose Anthropology as his optional subject and leaned on group discussions with a close-knit set of friends to polish his preparation strategy. To simulate exam conditions and improve answer writing, he joined a test series, and for the final interview stage, he took guidance from a private academy. He said that the feedback during his personality test preparation was very helpful. Interestingly, Dr Rangamanju also used AI tools in his study plan. While he did not rely on traditional coaching, he used AI for organizing study material and managing his progress.
Support System and Friendship That Helped
He gives a lot of credit to his support network — particularly a close friend and fellow aspirant, Dr Sachin Basavaraj Guttur, who cleared the UPSC exam in the same cycle with AIR 41. Their journey together, marked by mutual encouragement and shared study sessions, is widely seen as a model of companionship and resilience.
Final Take: Legacy, Sacrifice, and Service
Dr Rangamanju says that cracking UPSC was not just a personal achievement — it’s a tribute to his father’s service, his family’s sacrifices, and his own commitment to contributing to society. He hopes to continue working for the nation with the same dedication that he has shown throughout his UPSC journey.
