Assam Govt Appoints 8,206 Candidates; Hiring Hits 1.34 Lakh

The Assam government marked another milestone in its recruitment drive as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over 8,206 appointment letters on Thursday to candidates across higher and secondary education departments. With this round of appointments, the total number of government jobs filled on a merit basis in the current administration has reached 1,34,999, officials said. Addressing the ceremony, Sarma said the appointees had achieved their goal through hard work and without paying a single rupee. He emphasised that the transparent system had opened doors for many talented youth who earlier faced hurdles in gaining employment.

Transparent Recruitment in Focus

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to fair hiring practices. He noted that prior to Twenty Eleven, teacher recruitment in Assam suffered from political interference and nepotism, with multiple appointments made against single sanctioned posts. The introduction of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for primary, secondary and higher secondary levels marked the beginning of reform, he said, adding that obstacles during implementation were overcome and merit-based hiring is now firmly established.

Strengthening Public Education and Skill Development

According to government sources, the new recruitment push is part of a broader strategy to strengthen public education and harness the state’s youth potential. The Chief Minister stressed that Assam’s talent pool would contribute significantly to development if supported by robust institutions and meaningful job opportunities. He reiterated the target of creating two lakh job opportunities and said the current achievement signals a strong start. Department officials confirmed that letters issued on Thursday included teachers, instructors and support staff across multiple districts.

Next Steps for Recruits

Newly appointed candidates will undergo orientation and assignment procedures through the Directorate of Higher Education, Directorate of Secondary Education and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). Officials expect deployment to begin in the upcoming academic term. They also warned that future openings will continue to prioritise merit and transparency, with technology-enabled systems monitoring recruitment and transfers.
